i was discussing P2 workflows with my buddy this weekend and he ask me why can't i go from camera (P2) to a compact DVD player. then import the DVD into Sony Vegas. he thinks this is a way around the numerous headaches of P2 workflow i told him about.
i thought he was crazy but i'd thought i'd ask anyway ? is this possible ?
 
primary flaw with this is that the footage wouldnt be in HD. so what would be the benefit of going through all this kludge as opposed to just shooting to miniDV tape?

and what "headaches of P2 workflow" are you talking about?

i dont know if hes crazy. but he clearly doesnt know what hes talking about ; )

Standard DVDs have problems with playing back video starting at 15-20 Mbit/s, depending on brand. It is not possible to record 100 Mbit/s stream on it, I mean, in realtime. Even if it were possible, it would fit about 10-11 minutes of 24p or 4 minutes of 60i, not practical. It is also a mechanical device, prone to vibration, and each disc has to be finalized, which by itself may damage it.

Just not worth it.
 
so what would the footage be if i'm shooting to P2 720/24pn ? i'm not disputing, i'm just trying to find out why.

umm .. 720/24p HD.

Your buddy is way off base on several accounts

DVDs record the video in MPEG2 which is a Long GOP codec woefully inadequate for editing. And if he doesn't know what Long GOP is, then he doesn't have any business advising you.

The P2 workflow is well established, robust and reliable, it just depends on which platform, editor, etc., and there is plenty of discussion here about how to do it. If you can ask specific questions about your setup, you can get help.

But, you mentioned Vegas, which last I heard can't handle the P2 MXF format directly, but someone may correct me. I use FCP.
 
a compact dvd player (any dvd player for that matter) is SD. so it makes no difference what youre shooting. what it would process would be SD.

Well, the very first thing I see wrong with this suggestion is that a DVD *player* wouldn't be able to *record* a DVD...

Everybody else above has covered other flaws in the suggestion.

Here's my two cents....
Aside from everything else people commented on, the approach your friend suggested (which wouldn't work) is taking 3 steps (assuming you're setting your DVD recorder to capture and then either switching cables around to use it for play back or using another player. Plugging your camera into your PC for offloading clips and importing directly to your NLE takes 2 steps. (and it works!)

so you guys are saying i cannot hit "record" on the DVD player (of course the camera is hooked to the DVD player) and record ? in other words, what i would see out of my field monitor would not be coming off the P2 card ?
BTW, i agree with all that has been said but i really can't see why this can't work.
 
well on top of all the compression format that has been mentioned...

a DVD player DOES NOT RECORD.
a DVD player is NOT HIGH DEFINITION.

i dont know how much clearer we can possibly be here?.?.?.?
there are fundamental, like basic physics reasons this WILL NOT WORK

a peanut butter sandwich cannot become a salad no matter how much you want it to.
 
oops, i see my mistake. a DVD RECORDER. i can't believe i was saying dvd player.

i can shoot to tape, no problem. i think what is going on here is my failure to see what is actually happening when i shoot to P2 since i have never done it before. when you shoot SD, what you see on the viewfinder is what you get. so what i'm hearing is when you shoot HD, what you see on the viewfinder is not what you get. ?? if in fact it is, why can't i hook my hvx to a dvd RECORDER and record the output to a DVD. then if i want edit the DVD in Sony Vegas.

get this through your skull once and for all:

- DVDs ARE NOT HIGH DEFINITION! PERIOD!
- DVDs record a highly compressed STANDARD DEFINITION image, not suitable (nor fast enough) as an acquisition format.

im not sure if what comes out of the component output of an hvx is HD or SD. but even if it is SD and the DVD recorder could see it. what you would end up recording is an MPEG-compressed SD file that youd just have to rip back into your vegas setup. you can achieve better results than that just shoooting SD to tape and avoiding this ridiculous discussion.

what you see on nearly ANY prosumer viewfinder is just an approximation of what you get. and the viewfinder has little to do with the actual recorded content. a P2 card is really just a storage device. what is recorded on a P2 card is whatever format you tell the camera to record. and again. the P2 card has NOTHING to do with whats going to the viewfinder or the monitor output.

none of this matters anyway becase as we have told you REPEATEDLY you are hoping to send an HD image to an SD recording device and THATS JUST NOT POSSIBLE. not without intermediary downconversion. which is a complete other topic. wholly unrelated to what we are talking about here.

you might, out there somewhere find a bluray recorder that would accept live input from your camera. but again - these kinds of devices are intended for end user playback. not professional image acquisition. what they play back is highly compressed image NOT ADVISABLE for EDITING.

now please. i beg you. stop trying to spin straw into gold. if there was some cheap and easy way to get around P2 and achieve any kind of quality or reliablity - there are people on this forum way, way, WAY the hell smarter than you and me who would have figured it out by now.

if you cant afford P2 cards you probably dont need to be shooting HD video in the first place. i think you might want to consider HDV. that format shoots a form of HD onto miniDV tape

so, i will take my 32gb P2 card (which i can afford), buy me a system and be back if i have any more questions.

wow - you guys sure are sensitive. how was anything i said insulting? is it the english language thing? it was a valid question. a lot of folks here DONT speak english as a first language. i wondered if that might be the problem...

the kid asked a question. got very specific answers to his question then repeatedly came back with the same question...
