HVX200 protoype at RESfest Los Angeles

This is exactly what I'm going to do when I get an HVX for narrative filmmaking. I don't need a Firestore, and I don't need a laptop. I don't even need to take the P2 card out of the camera.

HVX200 camera only for around $5800
One 4GB P2 card for around $1000 (possibly less)
One off the shelf 250GB Firewire HDD for around $200 (cheaper if I use an enclosure and internal drives which can swap out)
TOTAL= Approx $7000

With this setup, I can record 4 minutes of 1080/24p, and while changing camera setups, just plug in the Firewire HDD and dump the footage directly from the camera to the Hard Disk. No laptop, no lost P2 card (because it never leaves the camera), no dropouts, and no time spent digitizing the footage later on. 1080/24p 4:2:2 DVCProHD for $7000. Heaven.

I am going to be shooting the same way. For narrative films, the 4 minute capacity is not so much of a big deal in my opinion. While you are dealing with owners not showing up to let you into their places or people showing up late, you will have plenty of time to transfer the data.

That's a pretty frugal, but funtional, strategy that I've been rethinking myself! Plus, I bet a lot of us are going to end up shooting a lot of 720p24 so we'll have a bit more recording time than that anyway.

Me? I'm going uncompressed with a DVX100HD mod and CineLerra on a Dual Opteron Linux box.
Who needs that dirty HVX anyways! (kidding, of course)

I think a lot of people are going to be shooting on the Firestore.

A long time ago in galaxy far far away, I shot long form narrative films on Super8 (2minutes, 30sec per roll at 24fps) and then on 100' daylight loading spools (2minutes, 30sec per load at 24fps). I have learned to love/hate the "spray the landscape with footage" freedom of video, but if the HVX lives up to it's promise, quality wise, P2 storage time is not going to be a problem.

I still want to get my hands on a production model and ring it out before I plunk down cash, but my hopes are up.

Anyone say what that speaker is for toward the rear handle/viewfinder?

It's the monitor speaker that use to be under the LCD on the DVX100's.

They said that it's allot easier to hear in that position. :)

Most of the pre-order's that we have been getting said that they are probably going to just use the DV tape deck for a while until media gets cheaper or some other high storage options are released.

Yes and no. It's new to firewire, but it's not a new concept. We'd been told that you could offload footage directly to a USB2 drive; it looks like offloading will actually be to Firewire drives instead.
Does that mean that USB drives are out of the picture? What's the USB port for, if not for transferring data?

Are you serious? That's awesome! With a setup that cheap I can put up with the short record time of the p2 card as well as the cost.
Would 720p24 get more time than 1080 on a 4gb p2?

That setup is only like 8k CAD much better than the 11k I originally budgeted for, it looks like I might be able to get this cam sooner than I think!

Does anyone know of any firewire hard drives that the camera can power so I won't always need an outlet?

Imagine a small, battery powered, Firewire drive...

Imagine a small, battery powered, Firewire drive...

...one that would fit in your pocket, run for a full day on a movie set, and hold 60GB. Imagine if it were priced like a consumer product, let's say $400. What would you call it? Hmm ... I know! iPod.

I'm sure that the camera will have a 4-pin firewire port and will not power the drives. I would invest in extension cords, long firewire cables with amplifiers and 12DC inverters. Considering the power requirments of other filmmaing equipment, finding power for a firewire drive should not be a problem.

It'll work for transferring to computers, for the camera to show up as an external drive on the Windows desktop for example. But I believe Jan said that USB drive control is not in the picture any longer, instead it's going to be done through firewire.

I think that the Firestore is going to save the day, especially if it is as compact as the FS-4, has a slim compact battery that mounts to it, holds 60 minutes of 1080 or 150 minutes of 720 24p, and is around $1000. I just don't see anyone buying that camera and not wanting to use its HD potential immediately, if an affordable solution is available.

At 720p24, you should be able to fit over 11 minutes onto a 4GB card.

Does anyone know if a 4GB card actually has 4GB of USEABLE space on it, or is it like hard drives where 4GB will only actually hold 3.5GB of data?

Could the firestore be as low os $1000?? They said sub 2k, so I was expecting it to be well over 1K.

The sensitivity will be an issue for me. I will definitely have to resort to employing the camera gain circuits (unfortunately!)--there goes my ultra-clean picture!

Sorry NBC I'm just curious... what you mean buy employing the camera gain circuits? :undecided

Thanks

I find that highly dissapointing.

mmm,

it all depends on what Pansonic is using as their definition of a GB... most companies say a DVD has 4.7 GB available for use, but that isn't true. That is based on the fact that 1000 MB = 1GB.... in reality.. a DVD is 4.3 GB...

so if they are saying 4GB with 1GB = 1000MB then we gonna be getting less.

4 'Actual' GB's is 4096 MB, with 1 GB = 1024MB... the actual base 2 representation.

Did anyone get to see the focus assist ( pixel zoom ) feature?

Any clue if the camera can output to a DVI monitor?

FYI, all hard drives I have ever seen ( 3.5 inch) run with 12v and 5v. I think the 12v is for the motor and the 5v is for the controller.

So in reality, no one needs an ac inverter to use a firewire HD. And of all the HD case's I have seen, they have just a 12v power cord (using an ac to dc rectifier).

So get a hold of a 12v battery and make yourself a cord to power the HD case and all will be happy.
