HVX200 + P2 + FW Drive

Nice that B & H has the card listed for less...

Maybe it'll drop even more in a month...

Okay if the banner that flashes saying you can purchase the camera for $5,499 and with two cards at $8,899 that makes the cards $1,700 each...

I'm thinking of an initial package of camera and one card.

Perhaps I can buy one card off someone who is willing to sell it from his 2 card package at $1,700....

Good idea!...lol

Got a question for you....how would you provide power to one of these drives when connected to the camera?

you cant.

But interestingly enough.. it will be interesting to see if people can use the old firestores or quickstreams as HVX devices.. a nice surprise if they do.

http://www.dvvideo.com/shop/storage/buyEnclosurePortable.htm

is the one you want.. it recharges when you plug it into your firewire desktop.. so you never need an adapter.

<PS> And if you're a lucky guy, as seems to be your avatar, you always can sell it at $2,795...

...and your HVX one 8GB P2 card private-bundle will be $6,104 (and for you the price of a 8GB P2 card will be $605).

Definitely, I must look another avatar...

Don't get me wrong, but unless you're shooting in the middle of nowhere; why not just plug into the wall for power? I mean, electricity is almost everywhere nowadays right?
And for the times you can't, install an DC to AC convertor in your car. They don't cost a fortune and you can use really fast, cord powered drives.
Or am I totally off?

Looks good.....are there enclosures for a 3.5" inch drive?

3.5in drives typically draw too much power to be battery powered. 2.5in drives are a much better portable solution. They may be slower than the larger drives, but they generally have a much higher shock rating, which makes them more resistant to being man-handled.

The new generation of 7200rpm notebook drives are pretty quick and power efficient.

as someone else said, wall power would be readily available about 50-70% of the time. and when wall power isnt available.. you can use a battery pack ..like one of those car jumpstarter packs that has a built in accessory plug as well. they cost about 30-50.00 and would run a external raid drive array for quite some time.. or you could use a UPS and just charge the battery and take it with you and it would run a raid drive array for quite a while off the battery. with either solution to portable power you could run a single external drive for a long long time. and you can recharge them when your by a wall..or car. or when your close to a wall with power..extension cords work wonders.. consider the fact that your going to need power for lighting throughout at least 80-90% of your film to begin with.. so your likely always going to have some sort of available, battery, or generated power scource to tap into and run a little drive off of unless your going all guerilla.. in which case you should probably have a firestore.

so .. in short, im really not worried about finding power for the drives because i need power for alot of other things anyway.. like a laptop, and lighting, and monitors, fans, battery chargers, ect. its just not adding any additional stress to my normal dramatic production workflow.

Having to go with a Hard drive in the pocket that need also batteries and cables... this reminds me the old time of video, when the recordar was a bag and the camara went on the shoulder.
Are we going backwards? I need a portable solution to move quickly in the field. I want to go to the war and not be thinking about where i left the battery for my hard drive. I want something that can be shaken without problems.

We already had all this fixed with tapes. And they were really cheap.

We could have this with P2 cards. But they are sooo expensive and storage capacity is small...

What is happening here?

one thing about using wall power.. not a really good idea, as power likes to go down, specially if you have a few 1k's blasting light everywhere.

Another thing for you:

You'd be surprised with the ammount of cinema work that is carried out with batteries and gennies. You simply can't be plugged in all thye time! Just a quick example: shooting in a car!

The reason I am leaning towards a 3.5 inch external instead of that 2.5 inch self powered enclosure is because not only are the 3.5s 7200rpm, being a little quicker, but it's soo hard to find a 2.5 inch drive that isnt some strange unkown brand.

actually.. 2.5" drives are very strict.. there are only a few companies that make them. 2.5" drives also are built with very strict tollerances, and are designed to be moved around, unlike 3.5" drives. If you drop a 2.5" enclosure from 3 feet.. you got a good chance of it working again. if you drop your 3.5" drive from 3 feet... you can kiss all that footage goodbye.

2.5 drives being designed for use in laptops are usually built to withstand shocks better than 3.5 inches.

A sharp bump while the 3.5 is running is usually enough to hurt it badly (bad sectors city).

Having killed a couple of 3.5's that way, I'm more inclined for the 2.5's, especially in enclosure casings.
