HVX200 + P2 + FW Drive

The Hitatchi travelstar 7k100 drives are the king of the hill.. its the only 2nd generation 7200rpm drive out there.. and has optimized shock and battery life. They are 30% faster than the older 7200rpm drives.

Looks like a good one, i've always heard good things about hitachi drives. But here's the thing, the drive's an ATA-100 drive not fw. Are you saying that the firewire enclosure will act as an adapter for this drive then?

one thing about using wall power.. not a really good idea, as power likes to go down, specially if you have a few 1k's blasting light everywhere.

..another bad thing is that some locations actually make you pay for the electricity all the power sucking lights use. :)

i think for my portable HDD for the most part its going to be a laptop with a variety of external drives so i can monitor stuff and be reviewing when the camera is doing something else, but im also really interested in seeing whats then available for little internal battery powered HDDs when the time comes because there are plenty of times when you cant or dont want or need to rely on a grid, and dont want to hassle with generating your own.

yeah.. but thats not wall power.

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear: I agree with you. You just can't depend on wall power, and that's what I meant...

You have to forgive me sometimes because english is my second language, and because I have a drinking problem.

you buy the powered encloser mentioned on this thread.. and put the hard rive in that

Lol yea I get that much but what i'm asking is, since the drive is an ATA100 drive and doesn't have a fw output, how would you connect the drive to the hvx which requires a fw connection. Or does the enclosure act as a converter for the drive and have a fw out on it?

yeah the enclosure changes it into firewire.. like all external enclosures do. If you look at those maxtor etc. external drives, that are USB or Firewire, they all have normal hard drives in them, ATA133 ones or 100 ones or even SATA ones. the plastic shell just has a little motherboard that converts ATA133 into Oxford firewire etc. to usb.

When shopping for an enclosure, make sure it has the Oxford 911 chipset; that's supposed to support full firewire-speed transfers to the hard disk. That TravelStar looks nicely fast...

So I have an older 17" G4 Laptop (133 Gz) But I put an Hitachi 7200 Drive in it awhile ago. I did it at TeckServe here in NY and they handed me my old 5400 in a bus powered firewire enclosure.
So I will record direct to Laptop with the DVX.
(Now Hitachi has the 100G drive @ 7200 and I was thinking of swapping it again -Since my HDrive is only 60G now and filled with Apps- since I want as much space as possible to record to)

My questions are:
-1- If I am recording to laptop with Final Cut's Log & Capture can I have another Bus powered Drive coming off my Machine (also a 7200) to store the footage from Final Cut (having pointed Final Cut to deposit them there). Meaning the Footage is moving from the Camera into the computer and being deposited on another drive (2 firewire transfers)? Or is this precarious?

-2- Will the camera work in this way without Any P2 cards?

-3- Will I be able to capture into a 133Gz Machine even if my HDrive is a 7200?

I am super excited by having my footage Digitized immeditely and the P2 workflow ($, Space Limitations and all) And I hope I can take advantage of my laptop, as a Firestore of sorts, so I can shoot for longer periods of time witout having to dump the P2 cards
(even if I have to strap it on my back)

Thanks,
John

again,
Any light shed is helpful:
3) Can I Capture to a PB 17 that is older (1.33Gz), but that I have put a 7200 HD in?
1) If So, Can I Capture in this way on to another external Bus powered 7200 USB2ed fom the PBook
2) Will this work with no P2cards (not that I will completely go this route)

I know the HVX isn't here yet so it's tricky to answer, but I am trying to gear up as intellegently as possible.
Thanks

I KNOW!!!!

I'm just going to drop this, it is getting too weird, and is clearly not going anywhere! :cheesy:

If you get a portable drive, can you stream the data through fire wire as you're shooting?

Evidently it must be an intellegent HD Like a laptop or a firestore
