Hvx200 At Ibc - Latest News From The Show

Well, I had to check out the footage at the apple booth, the supposedly dvcprohd footage shot incidently by the people of apple. The footage looks really nice, but it's too directed, so I'm almost sure it's not shot with the HVX200. But project settings were definitely 720p DVCproHD.

At the Panasonic area, I zoomed in all the way with one of the working models, pointing at the hairs of this curly chick. I noticed a crisp picture and more shallow DOF than I'm used to with dv cams.

I got a dvd titled : Countdown to HVX200 and it contains footage which suggests shot by the HVX. I will try and rip a piece ( if it's allowed (JAN?)) for everyone to see.

Tell me what bad info I have spread till now?
Is far as I know it's all correct

some of you just seem hard to convince

You've been doing a great job lars!!

It is much appreciated! I think the comment was just pointing out that we are just "taking your word for it" which may be incorrect due the stupidity or misleading nature of some of the staff/stands at these type of shows.

For example, that Canon "XL3" mock-up is clearly designed to mislead/confuse/hype forums such as this! Well done on the soop BTW!

I don't believe anyone was have a dig, just pointing out you can't believe everything you read on the internet.

I actually asked the apple guy if I could have some of the p2 footage on my portable hdd, but he told me he was not allowed to give me the footage. not that he was not willing to do so.
almost had a scoop of possibly the first actual footage of hvx200. too bad he was aware that he could not give any footage to anyone.

It sounds to me like the footage was from a Varicam. It has been mentioned that the HVX is only working in 1080i at present (God knows if that is true) so if the sequence was DVCPRO HD 720p it is unlikely to be from the HVX.

The footage that was showed me was 1080i, It was some very shaky footage filmed in amsterdam.
The nice guy at the apple booth told me the footage was from various sources, so it could be that there was both varicam and hvx200 in the finalcut projects.
Still it also possible that there was no actual hvx200 footage at all in the g5.

Do you know if the current promotions with the 100A (rebate, tapes, ...) will be applied to the 100B?

Thanks, Barry! Hey, I like that "Eagle Eye" business... I'll put that down on my custom title wish list if such an occasion arises...

your wish is my command :)

And I also wanted to take a moment to thank Lars and Mikko for all the valuable reporting they are doing for us.. Im sure alot of us wanted to be there and your doing a good job of keeping us posted.

   :cheesy:  <<crowd roaring>> :cheesy:

Well done Lars, nice typing Mikko... lol, you could tell he was freaking out trying to type as fast as possible so he could go have as much fun as possible. Both of you shall be awarded with the proper honors and remembered for your doings.

Where should we expect the recap from Jared and Barry? Back in the HVX thread?

Just a question for people who allready have a 100 or 100A. Is the lack of 16x9 in the LCD really that much of a hassle? Although the firewire syncing function of the 100B sounds cool, I'd only have one camera for the time being, so it wouldn't be any advantage for me. As far as the color of the camera's body, i couldn't care less if it's "sexier" on the 100B. It seems like it all comes down to the LCD, and frankly, it sounds like i'm better off buying the 100A for $3,400 and getting a $500 rebate + other goods, than paying $3,900 for the 100B with no rebate and possibly no book/DVD/magic bullet.

Hi guys, time for my day 3 afternoon update. The show has just closed, and i'm still on site as i paid for wireless for the day to get some more XL(?) pics out to Camcorderinfo...

I will do a longer write up of the day when i get hom in the evening, as i have an event to attend first, but here's a short version teaser...

First and foremost, nothign new on the HVX.. realistically I dont' think will get anything specific to report that we didn't allready get from NAB, except that there are a number of cameras here and theya re shooting something... infact they all appear to be only set up to shoot 1080i at the moment.. - Though the HVX200 at Canopus was supposedly showing off some footage that was shot at 24p.. and it looked preaty darn allright.
And as i'v said before, the raw component 1080i output from teh camera that's runnign at Panasonic looks fantastic. - better than the Z1 at least. (to be honest, i have yet to activly go and look at some footage from the JVC..)
At apple there was a mixture of "DVCPROHD" ..presumably varticam, or somethign else nice.. and from the HVX on a G5 in FCP. The footage was shot outside the tradeshow by the apple guys just on teh street, and it has no color correction etc (as the cmaera isn't yet fully funtional) but it looked preaty darn nice.. and then a quick color correction in FCP and it looked even better.
In short, refering to Jarred's and Barry's article from NAB where they said that it was doewn to the picture and that if the picture was up to par the camera shoudl kick the other's butts in features.. this apears to be happening.
A couple of quick feature updates though:
There WILL be 2 seperate cameras.. basically beacuse it's jsut too difficult to get a camera that can support so many formats to support double the number. The Z1 can only do it because it's not as versitile to beginwith.
And also, due to some techincal reasons, the Screen on the HVX will not be able to perform a verticle flip for when using a Mini35, etc.. Sorry guys, it's just outside the scope of this camera (heck, it took them 7monthes to make it work on the Varicam)

My topic for an in-depth report for the day is the new Firestore.
It will be called the FS100. It will be able to record anythign that the HVX200 can send out of the firewire port.. so, in short, anythign the camera can shoot. (all the 720's, 1080's and of course good 'ol DV!)
It'll be physically like the FS4, it'll have an internal 100GB hard drive, that's about 90mins of DVCPRO-HD (Cue rejoicement from all those long format fans..) ..it will not suport external hard drives.
Cost will be "under $2000" and it will be available from panasonic about when the camera is.
I'll type up the details tonight.

Also in a prodcut update on the A1 that i reported could switch between PAL and NTSC like the Z1 can... After searching through the menus, i was not able to find this feature.. So it's very likly that what i was told by a Sony rep was incorrect. I'll be the first to asdmit when I know I may be wrong, and I appologize for the possibly false report.
I'll do my best to confirm the truth in this matter.

I will post more indepth when I arrive home tonight.
And regarding the article.. I will do a full compiled write up on IBC that will be posted on tuesday or wednesday.

- Mikko

P.S. Lars.. where can I find you at the show tommorrow? I'd like to meet. Try looking for me at the Tiffen stand in hall 11... I'll prolly be there.

Sony a1 is not switchable.
I spoke to japanese guy from sony who seemed to know a lot about the camera.
he told me

a1e cineframe 25 / normal 50i
a1u cineframe 24 and 30 / normal 60i

I checked the menu, it was pal only.
So he was right.

/ sorry I will not be at IBC tomorrow I have to work. But I would like to meet you guys some time.

Hi,

No it is not allowed and second I believe that as this all settles down the DVD will be available on our respective websites for the asking. Copyright belongs to MEI, Japan. And frankly it is version three that will have footage from the HVX, Version 2.1 was shot entirely on Varicam and edited on FCP.

Best,

Jan
