Hvx200 At Ibc - Latest News From The Show

New York calling Amsterdam. I know you guys are doing this intentional. Let the dvxusers sweat a bit and come back like a thief in the night. Its all good... but we need info, we need info, we need info. Hey may be there is updates on the IBC web site.

DOn't worry, he is scandinavian and I know scandinavian tourists, they always tend to disappear the first night (the formula described by Ernest), but don't worry, tommorrow IBC will still open. And if he doesn't update, then I will, since I practically live around the corner.

Hi everyone! I'm SO sorry i'm late with the posts.. ..a breaf explanation:
I spent the first well over solid hour at the Panny booth, Jan wasnt' there yet. and no one knew wherese was.
..And basically, other than my first reports there hasn't been much to report.. no one there seems to know anything techincal about the camera.. i got the same script we've seen on their website for the pas 3 monthes over and over again.. no one coudl give me any straight answers.

I will be back there again tommorrow to see if Jan has arrived so that i can get some sensible answers.. most of the Panny people there were just dealers for all sround who where just as confussed as me.

They had 2 working HVXs there, plus a few mockups... One working 60i camera (NTSC) and one working 50i (PAL) camera.. those pictures with the screen shots are from the the NTSC moddle.

There was pleaty more speculation .. but that is all.. Supposedly the reasoning for the two moddles is purly for a sales advantage, but again, not confirmed.

There was a lot of talk of variable-frame rates. with one rep telling me that it worked like the varicam and could do 4,5,6,7.. all the way to 60P and could be changed during the shot to achive speed ramps.
Then another rep said that it would do 'some' .."about 12" diferent speeds. then another said that its not true variable with all framerates.
So to be honest, I really don't know.

I did get from one rep that the CCDs are 720 (by "about 1240.. or somethign like that").. and that 1080 is uprezed. Again, unconfirmed by anyone with any real technical knowledge.

Also, according to their flashy presentation of the camera, you can review clips, while you are still recording .. interesting feature I guess... I dont' really know how you'd use that.

In general I am HIGHLY dissapointed at the information avaialable from panasonic.
Basicaly it was the same info as NAB, but the camera was working (but couldn't be touched because they are the ONLY ones in existance) so who knows what settings they were shooting at.

I can tell you that the monitor output was beeing fed directly from the component outputs on the camera.

I will be there agian tommorrow and trying my damdest to locate Jan.. I will post as soon as I get anything concreate. But for now, we are still stuck with the same speculation as before over most everythign about the camera other than what you can see from the pictures.

Thanks, Mikko. What about the DVX100B? From the picture posted earlier, the card next to the camera did not show any feature changes. Did the droids at the booth have any more to say?

Thanks,
Dan

Mikko,
Was there a purple light on the set of the demo? In the photo "HVXpicture_med.jpg" you posted there's purple on the bottom right, which looks similar to the purple fringing chromatic abberation in lenses can cause in high contrast situations (as Rodrigo noted). It looks like there's too much of it, so it's probably colored lighting, but can you confirm this?
Thanks,
Jeremy

Can we not jump to conclusions about purple fringing or chromatic aberration by speculating on a couple of jpegs? Not cool. :embarasse

I'm wondering what Mikko's overall impression is of the images he saw. Obviously pictures of a screen won't tell us much, but he checked it out personally, viewed it on a monitor. The video look like the DVX, but HD?

Well as you can guess.. the Panny booth (and IBC in general) is full of colored lights! -Panny's stand had blue lights and plasmas with blue CGs all over them everywhere.
...so i'm going ot say that that is almost certainly just a blue ares of spill onto the set.

My subjective view: The picture from the HVX looked really good.
There colors where right on, and it was very nice and sharp.

As for the DVX100B.. not much data on that either.
Bascially an update of the 100A, with of some of the cool little features (like remote focus/iris - from a 2nd mini-plug connecter by the way) from the HVX.
After exhausing myself trying to get anything techinical I moved on to my list of many other things to do today, I will be back with Panny tomorrow.. if nothring else i'll take a round of closeups of the DVX100B

Lars? is it just me, or was that a really crappy presentation?

Ok it wasnt' crappy, but is was definalty mostly a list of repeat features we've allready heard about.

Lol, where did "Black Sapphire" come from?
Jan Crittenden from Panasonic noticed the Black Sapphire finish from BMW and liked it so well, she decided to change the camera! What else would you expect from a Jersey girl!?

presentation was not super

I did't watch it to the end, I got bored after 2 minutes,
But ibc in general was very exiting for me, here one example

I will go again tomorrow, hope they have some more info,
I also spoke to japanese guy from panasonic, he was nice but did't know to much about the cameras, and the others were all busy, so I did't ask anymore questions,I think panasonic has to do more about their PR. set up a nice presentation next time , with actual info/ like ccd resolution ect

Is the DVX100BE 4:3? I can read something about lcd 16:9 on the picture. Is the lcd switchable to display 16:9 squeezed image or is it a real 16:9 camcorder now?
