HVX price in Canada and pre-orders

DONT SHIP VIA UPS (sorry vuzz) UPS is a total rip off.

Fedex does the job the best, and you dont need to pay duty. Cameras have no duty, but you still gotta pay GST and PST, like normal. The last DVX I ordered from EVS (california) to me (vancouver) cost $60 overnight.

I echo that! Don't use UPS!!

I bought a $19.00 used lens from Ebay last year... the shipper used UPS.

Despite the fact that there is no duty on electronic equipment, UPS demanded I pay them a "brokerage fee" of $40.00 to cover the "duty" of $1.98!

I told them to go to hell and took the loss of the lens.

UPS are SCAMMERS!! I'm screaming this at the top of my lungs! DO NOT use UPS!!

Boy, that felt so good!

Thanks for the heads up. Let's hope there's some agressive bundling here in Canada!

dvshop.ca is one of the only cdn retailers that posts pricing and they're usually up-to-date and pretty competitive. they ship anywhere in Canada, i believe.

although they haven't updated their HVX section yet... still says list price $7499

2 dealers in Canada I would goto, and 2 dealers only.

Leos in Vancouver, and DVshop.ca in Toronto. All the rest that i have dealt with, in my opinion, are one small step above futureshop, except with a bad attitude. Doesnt help that the actual Panasonic reps are a little, well, errrr.

So it's safe to say David Craig won't be posting here anytime soon? :cheesy:

When I talked to him last week, he wasn't very forthcoming with answers. He just kept saying:"If you buy from the US, then you deal with Panasonic USA and I won't help you. If you buy from Canada, then I will help you."

That just seems like a cop out to me. He seemed totally clueless about why people were even asking him about ordering from the US.

He even warned us not to buy from the US because you will be missing accessories such as power cords and batteries.

From what I gathered, he honestly feels the inflated Canadian price is justified and that we should all be happy to pay it without question.

Can we convince Jan to talk some sense into him? :undecided

Yes.. Mr. Craig was pretty much useless in my conversations as well, and I won't be getting a christmas card from him anytime soon. I really tried, with all those guys. Kinda sucks for me to be such a cheerleader for Panasonic but hafta stear people away from those guys.. Thank god Jan and co is so damn good down south.

I dont think its worth asking Jan to talk to them.. I dont think she, or Panasonic Global really cares much about Panasonic Canada. I bet you Panasonic USA sells more cameras in a Day than Canada does in a month... or even a year ha ha ha.

Time for Pana Canada to just fire the reps they have, and import some actual talent. I know its really, really hard for stores up here to do business with them.

Well, actually, I can see his point. In the grand global scheme of things, Panasonic US and Panasonic Canada are basically competitors. Each sells cameras in their own territories, and each has to provide warranty service and customer support. So if you buy from the US, I can understand why he may not want to devote support resources to you. I'm not saying that I agree, of course, but that I can understand. And the US has been battling gray-market for years as well.

Sure would be nice if they could all get together under some big happy umbrella where everyone is supported by everyone and there was one worldwide warranty and such. That'd be ideal, and in this interconnected internet society, maybe it's inevitable. But it's not the reality we deal with today. In the reality of today, gray marketing is a very real issue, and the territory reps have to deal with it somehow. Jan's approach has been to offer bundled freebies that make the authorized camera way more appealing than a gray-market offering. Sounds like Canada hasn't yet sorted out its strategy to combat gray-marketing.

No, probably not, because Jan has no authority over Canada. She's the product line manager for the US. Panasonic Canada is, near as I can tell, a totally separate division that reports to their own bosses.

The official price difference for the basic camera between US and Canada is about $150cdn after exchange and you might save $50 on shipping. That's not too bad.

I've dealt with Lorne Lapham, Leo's, and Vidcom in Vancouver and the DVshop in Ontario and haven't had problems with any of them. I would go with the lowest price between any of them.

I placed my order with Lorne Lapham a couple of weeks ago. Based on their numbers at the time, they claimed I had a good chance of getting one from their first shipment. Have no idea how that situation has changed since, though, for new orders.

Hi,
Just to let everyone know I spoke with our Panasonic rep today. Still no news.
List pricing has changed on the panasonic.ca site, but dealers still can't quote a street/selling price to (potential) customers. I suspect the street price will be closer to list price than with previous cameras....but who knows for certain. I hope to have a better idea this week.
We're also very excited to see these cameras and get familiar with them!
FWIW hope that helps,

Brian Broz
FYI-We at Lorne Lapham's have bumped our quantity on order (due to the higher than expected number of pre-sales).

That's great to hear, Brian. I bet the positive reports from DV Expo had a hand in that.

Hey gang,

I'd just like to confirm a couple of things.

It was mentioned that a Canuck buying a US camcorder only needs to courier a cam in need of repair to the US (within in the Panny 1 year warranty limit) and swallow the shipping costs only, correct? In Canada this "courier" would be gratis (free) under the warranty?

Also, what about Mack warranties. Would a US purchased Mack 4 year (for example) be honoured by Canadian retailers who sell Mack warranties, eliminating the need to ship south of the border after the initial Panny 1 year warranty expires?

thanks for listening.

sincerely,

ian

Canadian Pricing on basic camera: $7100 CAN MSRP + GST = $7597 CAN (Canadian Retailers are known to stick tight to the MSRP)

American Pricing on basic camera: $5399 US + $100 shipping = $5499 US
At current exchange rate, $5499 US = $6,327.97 CAD
$6327.97 CAD + GST = $6770.93 CAN

Add PST and the difference is even greater. I excluded it because I don't pay any in my province.

So I work out that $7597 - $6770.93 = $826.07 CAN difference in pricing. That's an extra P2 card and some batteries for the same price if you order from the US.

Please explain how you got the $150 difference in pricing.

Now you start to see where I am going with this this ProjX.. Im not just making this stuff up.

I am however going to meet with some retailers here in vancouver tommorow to see what I can do to get them on our side.. because it just doesn't make sense to me.

I will report back tommorow afternoon.
