HVX PAL vs HVX NTSC

Hi folks,

We all know that the DVX PAL has better resolution than the DVX NTSC. Since, HD is not tied to any format, the only difference we will nottice from footage shot from the two models is the playing speed, right?
Why don't just stick 24p in a PAL version as well?

Sorry to raise the subject again and again and again...

There is NO PAL HD or NTSC HD. Digital PAL is 720x576 pixel and digital NTSC is 720 x 486 pixel. Everything with a higher resolution simply is 720i or 720p or 1080i or 1080p, both at a number of different framerates. Period.
While 60, 30, 29.97, 24 and 23.97 fps are typical framerates for NTSC countries, 25 and 50 fps are typical framerates for PAL countries.

Hope this helps,

Peter

That's what araujofh was saying.
That as the resolutions now match, because there is no HD NTSC or PAL..
And the camera allready has a nice choise of framerates...

So why not make one of the frameates in the NTSC camera be 25p and/or 50p/50i ..so that it could be played back at a proper PAL compatible framerate.
And why not have the PAL version also shoot 30p and 60p/i.. so that it could be played back into a NTSC compatible system.

I actually fully agree with this request... I live in a PAL country, but al slo do a lot of shooting in a NTSC country for broadcast there. Why can't I get one camera that I can use for both. (other than the Z1 of course). So far that is my only resovation with this camera, but it's a big one.

Yes, that is right Mikko. I wasn't talking about HD PAL vs HD NTSC, but HVX PAL vs HVX NTSC with regards to frame rate.

I just guess that you can't have it all, right?

But it would be cool to have it like the Varicam which is one camera only. They don't have a 25p and a 24p one. Am I right?

Also as most of you know, the Sony HVR-Z1 will shoot 1080 50 or 60i, and NTSC or PAL in DV or DVCAM....and will downconvert the HDV signal (but not cross-convert).
All the camera does is essentially "reboot" to switch from 50i to 60i...and vice versa.
A lot of us would really, really like this feature...but I think we're all sounding like a broken record Jan! If you listened to all of our requests we'd have a camera twice as good as the Varicam or Sony F900 for $5995 :-)
Looking forward to seeing the camera at IBC...if anyone knows of any filmmaker meetings or nights out...let me know.
Cheers,

.. make that: "Really, really, really, really" like this feature!

I'll see you at IBC maybe Brian?

You guys forget that the Pal version of the HVX vill have different chroma-res. As I understand the pal will have chroma of 1440*1080 vs the NTSC that will have 1280*1080. Because the pal has 100mbs/50i vs NTSC 100mbs/60i signal. that gives 4 mbs per frame vs 3,33 mbs per frame if you shoot progressive.

Where did you read this?
Couldn't just slow down the 25p to 24p in-camera? If they do the pull-down for the NTSC version, why not do the slow down in the PAL version?
Maybe it is expensive to do that. Who knows?

I read it from a very good source, this site.

If you can shoot something in 25P there is not really any need for 24P just slow it down 4% if you are going to do filmout.

So slow down is something you can do in post.

Yes movieswede that's right, but for news gathering, you don't do post in most cases, so it would be very handy to shoot both 30 and 25frames. I live in NTSC region but do a lot for Pal regions. You can buy 2 camera's thats correct but shooting 2 framerates would be very handy.

Yes I would not argue against you there. I would love to have universal camcorder. That can shoot everything.

but when we dont gonna get it im happy that i get more chroma res on the PAL version.

All of the early press, hype, rumours... indicated that this would be the one camera for everyone, all of the resolutions, all of the frame rates. Now finding out that there will be separate cameras for pal and ntsc countries is a big let down. The z1 does it, why not the hvx, if its only a firmware issue why not make it universal. I would probably never shoot in a pal frame rate, but it would be nice to know I had the option. I can shoot PAL 16mm at 25 fps, if I so desired, but I leave my crystal control locked on 24. Despite the insane cost of celluloid it looks like film will remain the only universal format for some time yet.

Didnt even realize this before now. Can any one confirm if there will be both a PAL and a NTSC version? Or will it just be one version ..?

If anyone have any definite confirmation I would love to see it.

If you hit search on this forum you will find that there are two versions.
And I think the PAL will do 24p but only in HD. So just 25p in DV and the entire DVCPRO range. Wich makes sense cause you can't play 24p in a PAL system anyway.
But if anyone @ Panna is reading this: a NTSC/PAL switchable camera would defenetly rock.
Global coverage with one camera! :)
Well, exept for secam countries then.

Yeah, but if the French want their own format they can have it! Compatible or not... (like Sony really...)

As far as I know, the 50i camera will not do 24p in any mode. It does 25p. The 60i camera won't do 25p, it'll do 24p and 30p. Similar to how the DVX works.
