Hey David, nice work here. I don't really follow the complaints about the white shirts blowing out. Yeah, they're bright. They're white shirts. I expect them to be white. Anyway.
I also noticed that LAPD drives by right as the bullies tear into the kid, though! But I guess even from a driveby they could tell that they weren't anywhere near actually hitting him.
Power of the Pen rough cut is out for approval today, by the way.
When I first watched this, I had no volume. When I watched it again and realized that the Fray was all over this, I suddenly felt very confounded and annoyed by this short (plus, the version of the song is extraordinarily voice heavy). This has nothing to do with the footage, obviously -- which I thought was very technically good. I just don't understand why the Fray is over this. It gives it an unneeded feel, as if it's now trying to be a music video or something....
Tightly framed shots may have helped hide the lack of contact in the mauling scene. Handheld may have given it a greater sense of tension. You may have been going for a different effect though.
Great piece, in terms of cinematics...I also feel that a nice film score would send this short over the edge. Great E2E sharpness on the M2, Great lighting, very professional!
Exceptional Wrok David. Really liked it. Absolutely stunning demo reel.
I am planning to shoot a short in the next couple of months and was looking to use the HVX + M2 combo. My only question is ( and I know this is a known isses) but in low lighting how good or bad the M2 is? Based on your experience what kind of lighting setup(HMI etc) would you recommed for indoor shoot and night shoot?
I wish you were in east coast man and I had the money to fly you in for my short.
Kris,
I can't recommend an end-all lighting package for all situations. It always depends on what you're shooting. That said, you can't go wrong with a couple HMI's (1200w and 575w) for most shoots. Yes, adapters and lenses eat up light. All you can do is work with it intelligently.
