HVX/m2 short: "Remember the Days"

Hey thats some great lighting and compositions you have! What lights did you use and what were your setups like? Any chance you could spread some lighting diagrams and behind the scenes shots? I might be doing a video in a school sometime soon.

A few gripes though - Firstly when he rides his bike out of his house i noticed the shake which looked artificial. I dont know if this works in the film but it looked weird that time. Also i think i saw what looked like vignetting in the classroom scenes as well. But i think the biggest flaw was the beating up of the guy - it was quite obviously staged and one of the bullies wasnt even touching the guy. Other than that it was technically brilliant!

Ditto. Really liked the look of this. Thought the shaking on that bike shot was by accident though... The bully beating was another thing that jumped out... and in the classroom one dolly shot seemed a bit jerky.. but tha'ts it!

So darn impressed that you shot this in 2 days though. That's pretty darn efficient... indeed. I also think that this is some of the best looking edge to edge sharpness adapter footage I've seen.. What did you use? Settings and all that?

Definitely made me rethink getting one. Loved the rack focus shots in the classroom.... and outside. Nice shots on the bus too...

Looked really nice... Whats the intended final product? Congrats and some sweet looking footage. Don't think the average person would tell the difference to 16mm nor would they care as it looks sweet.

I ran a fix for the shake on the bike shot. It was a result of the camera being so front-heavy that the follow focus' motion was amplified. I'll need to invest in those Zacuto rods to counter-balance next time.
The other two shots jump out at me too. I couldn't quite ask the kid to take a real beating, unfortunately... :( The schedule was quite hectic as well, but that's thanks to the economy of shoving everything into a weekend rental.

My m2 settings were 75 zoom, 25 focus. I've found that the edge sharpness can vary according to the quality of the lens, however. Primes certainly hold up much better than zooms.

Hey Dave,

Did you have an AC and an operator?

- 00:07 The girls in the white shirts (white sucks) are blown out.
- 00:40 I think that some of the focus pulls were off.
- 00:45 There is a shadow on the wall
- 01:04 Some of the singles are really great with the shallow focus.
- 00:54 That being said I don't think that the wide shots, I'm thinking of the dolly across the desks, could have been at 5.6 to get some of the other students in focus.
- What lenses are you using?
- 01:24 White shirts are evil outside with video
- 02:16 What white balance are you using. The sunlight looks odd.
- 02:21 Lookin at the camera. I think you could have stopped down 1/2 stop to help the focus puller out.
- 02:53 Great shot.

HVX+M2 is a complicated system to get perfect. I think your results are really good. I'm mainly confused with the colors. Are you custom w/b or presets. The colors in the classroom are weird. 02:05 I'm assuming tungsten lightin and maybe house florescents?

Are there any pictures of your setup?

Looking forward to seeing the completed short. Cheers,

Matt

25! I go 15. I've heard the more you get close to the achromat the better (infact i scratched it...). But I will try your distance.
Escozooz is right, the combo is pretty complicated to get pefection. When it happens is fantastic thou.
The short is cool, something a little bit off but not enough to make a timecoded list. I think you already know what is not working as you desire. Good job and green light for another project

Only clips I like get the timecoded list

i love the hvx and m2 combo!!! ITS MY FAVORITE!!!

... man i want one. i have a dvx and no 35mm adapter. but shyyyt... the hvx and the m2 look JUST like motion pictures. bravo, very nice stuff!

I really like this short but I have to ask one thing:

WHAT IS THE BEST RIG FOR SHOULDER MOUNTING THE HVX+M2 COMBO?

I mean anything short of an easyrig (which I wish I could afford -- seems perfect), that is.

And if there isn't an answer in terms of "best," then what did you use, dcarstens?

cool

for some rason the vid stops playing after 20 seconds, but looks good.

what shutter were you using for this?

Zac, I rented these for the handheld shots.
http://www.cavision.com/rods/RS15HD.htm

I primarily stuck with the 180-degree shutter for the bulk of the shoot, though I sometimes opened up to a 1/24th shutter when I had to use slower lenses (my request to rent superspeeds was turned down). The outdoor fight scene was shot with a 1/250th shutter.

Matt- wow, you really know what you're looking for, eh? I did have a fantastic AC, and I op'd. White balance was done manually for each location, though I tweaked the in-camera color temp on a couple scenes to give them a specific feel. The shots during sunset were changing rapidly- as the sun literally set between takes and angles (unintentional, of course, as we were way behind schedule, or lack of, by that point).

I was strying to upload a smaller file-sized version when I left the house to catch a flight. My internet connection must have choked, a curse that Comcast has blessed me with for months now. I've re-uploaded the file, so it should download completely now.

this is really great - I love the look - I dont mind the blow outs - they look nice and contained.

Great job - what lenses were you working with?

some truly beautiful compositions in there, david. i also checked out some of your other samples. infinite tree had some incredibly striking images. i sent you an email.

I am very impressed with your short. The only thing that irked me, as stated previously, was the fake beating. I think you could have roughed the kid up lightly to give it more realistic effect. I was not bothered by any blow-outs, or any issues with your whites.

WHITE SUCKS!...haha...those shirts in the entire thing were killing me. I think if you had managed to keep detail in those highlights it would have looked great. I would have suggest underexposing a bit....I do that sometimes when i have awful highlights and it seems to manage them better and then you can pull up mid tones in a post a bit...the shot walking down the hallway sticks out as a relaly good shot unfortunetly it cuts in weirdly because the color tone is diffrent then the shot before and after it...and its bit underexposed (which works!) while other shots are not.

I gotta disagree on the white shirts...I thought they looked fine. The slo-mo on the beating didn't really help sell it, a better choice might have been to shoot 22fps with a faster shutter speed. 60fps matched the tone though.
