HVX Direct to MAC/FCP

If someone could be so kind as to give me their ALMOST fool proof method of recording from the HVX DIRECT to their MAC via FCP and Firewire, that would be most appreciated! DETAILS would be GREAT... LIKE:

STEP 1: Turn camera on
STEP 2: Turn computer on

Can I record in the 24pN mode?

Does it store it like a P2 card (contents/lastclip.txt) or as media files?

What is the max LENGTH of the firewire cable that I can use?

Why does panasonic tell me to TURN THUMBNAILS off? and where do I do that
from?

What TIPS to SAVE my ass can you give me?

Can I capture from 2 CAMERAS at the same time?

What is the best drive to use?

Is FW800 not needed because the camera is FW400?

THANK YOU!!

This would be a great STICKY when completed..

You can NOT stream native modes out the firewire port. Only two cards.

To FCP, the files creates are QuickTime files.

For FW400, the maximum length is 4.5-meters (14.85 ft.)

Don't know what you are referring to re Thumbnails for recording to FCP.

Can't capture directly to FCP with two cams

The best drive depends on whether you are capturing to laptop or desktop

FW800 isn't necessary.

Nothing supports recording from a camera in NATIVE mode because in this case the DV port is disabled -- streaming implies a realtime operation, and since NATIVE mode doesn't include the redundant frames, it isn't compliant with the realtime protocol requirements.

There are solutions that support effective NATIVE recording by dropping the redundant frames from a camera in non-NATIVE mode as they are received. DV Rack does this, and the FS-100 can do this as well.

I posted a similar question a couple of weeks ago, and I'm still learning. I won't try to convince you that I'm an expert, but I have made the system work and I've learned a couple of interesting things.

What kind of Mac and which version of FCP are you using? Might make a difference.

One thing in particular is that the camera does NOT need to be recording to capture. It sends a full-res video stream down the 1394 line in 'pause' mode.

I use WD IBook 500g 3-way drives, but I've read about others being used. I connect via FW 800 to the drive, and FW 400 to the camera. Universal advice is to NOT record to the Mac's internal HDD.

I'm running into a MacBook Pro, and was advised to get an Expresscard adaptor for firewire, and run one of the connections out that port. I was told that on a MacBook, that the FW400 and FW800 ports are actually sharing the same bus, so by using the expresscard bus, speed will improve.

And no, you can't capture native recording directly as the HVX doesn't send that video out the 1394.

emart suggestions are correct, insofar as I know, particularly the advice about getting an EC/34 card to create a second FW bus.

i love how noone still has explained exactly how recording directly is accomplished...

Setting up to stream Firewire to FCP in Capture Now mode is convoluted at best. I had to talk to an HVX expert at panasonic to figure that out.

An even better solution is the HD Monitor Pro application from redlightningsoftware.com

Plug in the firewire cable from the HVX to the Fw 400 port on a MacBook Pro and turn on the camera. Open HD Monitor Pro and immediately you are receiving the video stream from the camera. You can then either click record in the application or use the record button on the camera to start recording.

That proves to me that there is always a video stream coming out the Firewire port on the HVX.
