HVX and apple archiving

I think I'm gonna buy one of those new apple 8 core workstations as soon as they come out. Being that I'm a PC guy, I have a few questions concering the apple.

1. Are the optical drive bays on apple computers swappable? Say I want to ad a Blu-Ray player for HVX archiving when they become available. Will I be able to pull out the old DVD tray and put in the new blu-ray one?

2. Sony sells a blu-ray drive for around 800 bucks. Does anyone know If it is compatible with apple? Are there currently any blu-ray drives compatible with apple?

Yes you can take out the drives to put different or newer ones in. THe only thing different physically about the drives in the Mac Pros and PowerMac G5 systems is the front cover is not there to allow it to fit through the smaller sized slot. Ive replaced the drives in a few of these systems already as DVD burners got faster and became dual layer.

the second question, we dont know yet, but there is an external Blu Ray drive that will ship with mac compatible drivers, i forget the manufacturer, but they will be compatible for sure. I also read there is a toast update that will take care of data burning for blu ray

I have a MacPro Xeon quad. I have the stock DL DVD burner in one bay and a Lightscribe in the second bay.

DVD SP on the Mac does not yet support blu ray. In fact I don't know of any PC or Mac that supports blu ray authoring as yet.

DVDSP can create HD DVDs on red dye DVD Recordables now.

You can possibly backup to blu ray with Toast (Mac), but that release is not yet quite available.

It's the stock DVD recordable discs that are currently available.

I call them red dye, and the HD DVDs and blu rays are some other color dye

:)

your verbal trickery!

Hey, im gunna be picking up the MS HD-DVD Xbox 360 add on today, hope it plays DVD's with HD-DVD content on them, it would be less of a hassle than hooking the MBP to the big screen to watch stuff we shot in HD on it.

Actually, HD DVD uses a red laser to inscribe, BluRay uses, you guessed it, a blue laser to inscribe.

Ok, i pick up the HD-DVD player today at Circuit City after work. only 216 after tax, i think it comes with King Kong for free. Anyone wanna buy it? LOL. I think my first HD-DVD movie purchase will be 'The Thing'. Ill run a test burn of the MPEG2 + AIFF as well to see how well that works out.
