HVX 720pn to AE 7 workflow question

Hi there,
I've been reading the forums for quite a while, but only recently got an HVX and haven't had too much time to mess around with it. So far things are making some sense, but the framerates etc. are messing me up a bit. Hoping you all can help:

I shoot at 720pn 24fps to save some P2 space. I ingest this into a 24p timeline in FCP. Everything is good. I export shots for After Effects, do my compositing and send them back to FCP.
My confusion is here. I know if shooting 720p, the "real" framerate is 59.9 or 60 (on a 24 timeline?), and I can export from AE as DVCProHD 720p 59.9 with 23.976 as my framerate. What about 720pn? Is it okay to export it as DVCProHD 720p 59.9 with 23.976 framerate, or has my "true" 24 now become 60?

Hope that makes sense, and thanks!

Nope, if you're shooting in the N modes then your framerate is now "true". Don't use 59.9, use whatever you shot (24, 30, whatever).

Thanks for your quick response! You confirmed my suspicion, but that leads me to another question.

What do I do when exporting from After Effects? There is no preset for 720pn@23.976, just 720p 59.9. Should I not shoot native? Thanks!

One thing to try.

Open AE.

Import a clip 720/24pn

Drag that clip to the new project icon, and then delete the clip. The project should match the clip settings.

Yes , making a new comp with the correct sizing, framerate etc. works just fine , it's the exporting that doesn't match, it only has 59.9 fps options in dvcpro hd. Darn! Maybe it's just one of those things, but if anyone has any other thoughts, that'd be great. Thanks for your response!

Oh, sorry about that. Yes, I do get the "use comp's framerate" setting, but in "output module —>format options," the only thing close is DVCPro HD at 59.9, and if I pick that, it says "please change framerate settings in comp" or something similar. I don't want to export 8-bit uncompressed or animation (filesizes are insane), so I was hoping to just send things back out exactly as they went in. Am I missing an AE codec or something? Thank you, thank you!
