Hvx-200 Faq

Everyone wants to talk about the P2 card price and alternative is cheap and unreliable Hard drive. Think the P2 as an insurance to your footage. You buy insurance only one time for all the footage you going to shoot with P2. Also with
P2 long continuous format is thinking in terms of Tape. You get use to rolling tape for hours without stopping. You have to think differently with P2 you can break the footage with Prerecord 2 sec without braking the timcode. THink of benefit that create. In the end when you have beautifull picture to sell you asking more money for it are you going to say to Panasonic yes thank you this is extra money for your P2 card. Think Big shoot small with P2
 
Barry:- Can we record audio on a dv tape while recording DVC PRO HD on a P2 and use the tape in post to edit music and basically be able to use it instead of a DAT recorder. That is CAN THE AUDIO AND VIDEO BE SEPERATELY HANDLED AS WE DO IN 35mm USING NAGRA?

no.. unless you go out the XLR's to another HVX mounted on your hotshoe :)
 
Hi i'm a newbie but might have some interesting news regarding the hvx200.
My best buddy works for Boeing and he says that they now use Panasonic cameras for some of their needs that use p2 cards. He said that boeing forced Panasonic to supply them with a generic card reader formatter that takes 5gig and 10gig cards and that 20-100gig cards will soon be on their way. He seems to think that these cards will work in the hvx200 at a fraction of the cost. He's talking about $200 or $300 per card. I certainly hope this turns out to be true. 4 100gig cards would seem just about right to shoot hd. This should cover most things eventhough fs4 80gig seems pretty good just expensive. Is there some special formatting that has to happen to these cards or what?
 
Welcome Michael T. I can pretty much gurantee that that information is innacurate, but to answer your question yes there is some secret sauce that needs to happen in the cards.. you cant just put a pcmcia hard drive in the card and hope it will work.

They may have build some kinda HDD for firewire streaming or something. A $300 card holding 100GB in a P2 slot is VERY unlikely. That figure is very possible for a HDD though.

When in "P2" mode, the DV tape does not "exist" as far as the camera is concerned.

P2 stores the files as MXF files, so the audio is a separate file from the video, but it's all on the one card.

I work for Boeing - and they dont let us take my tiny teeny videocam cellphone inside... let alone a SDX

This is my understanding from our engineering department.
The P2 card is not a memory device, but rather a PCI target,
a peripheral device on the PCI bus of the camera. In essence
it is a microcomputer of it's own, containing such things
as a PCI bridge with CardBus Extension a command interpreter
and Flash Ram controller. The P2 card is what has the
functionality to structure directories and write files. It
actually performs the tasks the camera asks it to do.

Thus the high cost of this unit and the impossibility to have
a simple ram card or a PCMCIA device communicate with the camera.
The camera actually has a driver in it's operating system to
"talk" with the P2 card.

Yes you are right. The Operating system is Linux based and it stripes the card in Raid o. Also it has Data verification mode to make sure there is no corruption in the Data. Yes it also had a driver. Because of its cost they are repairable by the Panasonic service Dept. It is designed as a PCMCIA slot for ease of communication with Laptop.

So much for someone thinking they can slap a Compact Flash card into an adaptor and have a "cheap P2"...

About the framerates: so is 24p really 23.976p, 30p = 29.97p, and 60p = 59.94p ?
If so, is this true for both 720 and 1080?

Yes, because it's ATSC-compliant and NTSC-compliant, and those are the framerates that the US television system are based on. If they'd chosen actual 24.000, 30.000 and 60.000, those wouldn't be broadcast-compliant and wouldn't work with televisions, etc.
