Hvx-200 Faq

So is "gain" refer to the equivelent of sensor sensitivity or "ISO" in still photography? If so, what do the various levels of gain correspond to in terms of traditional ISO/ASA?
 
I've been taking a crash course about the HVX200 and all comparable models and I think I'm more confused than ever.

I thought the HVX200 was the camera for me, but from the intensive reading I'm not so sure. I don't even know if any camera offers exactly what I'm looking for.

I'm in need of a camera that can shoot 4:3 in 720 (DVCPro?) and can shoot 16:9 in 720 or 1080.

Am I right that the HVX doesn't offer the 4:3 option in 720?

If not, is there a camera that does?

Thanks a lot for the help as these new cameras certainly seem to have quite a learning curve.

There are no HD cameras that record in 4:3, it is not an HD aspect ratio. Only 16:9.

The HVX does 4:3 in standard-def, in DV or DVCPRO or DVCPRO50. And it also does 16:9 in standard-def. But in high-def, all HD cameras are 16:9-only because all HD is 16:9-only.
 
Don't know exactly where this question goes...did not locate a comprehensive audio thread. I want to record true MOS. Can I turn off all the audio track recording ability so the P2 cards don't spit out any audio files, as opposed to audio files with no audible sound because the input levels are turned down.

That's a bizzare request but anyway, there is no way to disable Ch 3 and 4 on the HVX, they record an average audio level from the camcorder's on-board mic no matter what you set. There is no on-off switch for it.

Ch 1 and 2 can be switched to the cameras XLR inputs. Obviously if no microphone is plugged in, than there is no electronic signal to record. But you will still get a blank channels on the audio tracks of your timeline. I have never heard of a professional video camera that has a way to disable recording of any audio tracks. I have heard of industrial cameras and high speed cameras that record picture only but they are not generally practical for normal shooting.

Is this some sort of security issue or just a self-imposed sort of Dogme95 kind of requirement? Why not buy a film camera? Then you will never have to deal with the audio demons that plague you? ;-)

There have been some links posted for user manuals on this thread. I'm looking for the service manual for the hvx200. Anyone have one they can get to me?

I've had a client take a small chunk out of the P2 door on the back of the unit, and for insurance I want to get a new door. Panasonic Service Division couldn't tell me anything on the phone, because their parts department (if you can believe this) has told me that they don't have a parts catalogue or breakdown info for the camera. They have the parts, but no info about them. They can't speculate on the part number of a part. NICE WORK FLOW.

I've contacted Video Clinic, another authorized repair HVX200 repair place, but they only have a part number for the entire back of the camera and it appears like that will cost $400. All I need is the door, and only becuase I don't want the camera to look like it's been through a warzone when I rent it out. This should be a $50 repair!

So, thats my story. Parts manual anyone?

does the HVX200 record 1080i DVPRO HD 100mbps only into the P2 card? or does it record it also into the tape?
What is the mbps recording of the sony hdr fx1?

Also keep in mind that the data rates that are being being genrated here are much larger that what you get in HDV. So just to compare the HDV is 25Mbs. DVCPRO HD is 100Mbs. There is less compression in DVCPRO HD and part of the scheme is that each frame is resolution independent of any other frame unlike the Long Groups of Pictures that are in HDV or XDCAM HD. Think aobut the fact that an uncompressd HD picture at 8 bit is 994Mbs. There is a lot of compression going on to get to 100, imagine what you have to give away to get to 25Mbs or even 35 Mbs.


The tape mechanisms in the HDV cameras can only spin fast enough to get to 25Mbs. This is why there are no XDCAM HD cameras that are tape based. Not that you cannot get tape machines to spin faster because you can, you cannot get an inexpensive transport to spin faster. And lastly no one would want to put the R & D into making a cheap one go faster because tape is at the ending of its life cycle. And I don't mean that all tape will be gon quickly but rather like any old format it will fade away. The real take away from this is that world is going to file based recording systems. Anyone that has done DV work with a Firestore has been doing this for the last couple years, and they use the tape as back up. But there are other ways to deal with having backup and redundancy.

The tradeoffs are there but the advantge of working tapeless or rather in a file based workflow is the speed at which you can move around and start working with the images you recorded. There is no more batch capture and the minute that the first clip comes into the bin you are able to start working.

If I record in HD and want to play the final product on my 4:3 non-HD television set in a 2.35 format , could this be easily done? How? Thanx for any help
