Thanks for the faqs.. I am needing to buy the HVX 200 for a project starting in March 07(wish I could wait till after NAB), but wanting to spend my $ wisely, I am wondering what the best guess is for when the second generation might be out? I know, it's the age old question, but any suggestions for this timeline. I also heard the 16gig P2's would be out in the fall of '06 , any new info from IBC? Sorry to fuel the speculation.....

Hello,
I have exactly 4 days left to buy a HD camera to take with me to Central Asia...Besides the updated models/storage issues being discussed here, I have a ? re: HVX200 really a HD camera? I have come across this review of specs comparing several cameras---how does this reflect on the marketing image of HVX200 when the effective resolution is 550 x 540 and the CCD chips are 960 X 540??

Any explanations would be very welcome as I am running out of time and would rather not have a camera shipped from B&H in NYC to Central Asia by global express (if I cannot make a rational decision). Thanks.

"HVX in both 720p and 1080i showed 540 lines, as if its 1080p CCDs images were being field-doubled like the Z1's CF or the Canon's 24f modes. As far as we know, there's no setting on the HVX that causes such field-doubling (slow shutters aside), so this result is puzzling to say the least.

The HVX's anomalous vertical result also casts the horizontal numbers into doubt as far as I'm concerned; I'll want to test another sample of this camera a bit further into the production run to see if we saw a sample-based aberration or if it really is a 550-line camera horizontally and 540 vertically. Before you gnash teeth and rend clothing in despair at the camera's poor showing, wait until we have more data points!

1080-line camera limiting resolutions:

- Numbers in parentheses are for non-native recording rates, i.e., CF25 or 24f modes. Note also that the CineAlta will show 700+ lines vertically in interlaced modes.

- Numbers are for 10-bit uncompressed recordings at 1920x1080 resolution. Video recorded to the camera's native recording format may show lower horizontal resolution numbers due to subsampling: HDCAM, HDV, and 50i DVCPROHD top out around 810 TVL/ph; 60i DVCPROHD goes to 720 TVl/ph.

- The HVX's horizontal pixel count is not published.

- The HVX's resolution numbers are suspect and should not be trusted until further testing is done.

Anyone knows about HVX200's CCD is only 960 x 720 ? ( Not a square pixel in 16:9 ) so the picture density per sec is a bit low comapre the REAL 720P HDV.
 
NEW JVC GYHD251E is a 1/3 "CCDs 14 bit A to D same as HDX900 only the sensitivity difference excluding camera settings. But big prices different though.

Also, HVX200 can not configure to Studio Camera + CCU + Talkback etc.

Actually this is a bit of misinformation as once you have compression done to a picture there is no return. So HDV at 25Mbs, with long GOP, versus DVCPRO HD at 100Mbs, with an Intraframe algorithm where each frame stands alone is by far a better looking picture on a frame to frame basis. Additionally when you look at any CCD, you have to understand the fact that it is an analog device and there is no pixel to pixel, from CCD to Recording, relationship. In fact in some cases, having too much resolution on a 1/3" imager tends to cause aliasing or undue artifacts on HDV.

So you really need to understand the entire system before you make a statement like this.

Additionally comparing the new JVC camera to a 2/3" camera recording DVCPRO HD is crazy. The 2/3" camera will outperform it, no question. Completely different ball park.

My 2 HVX's only seem to have a 1080i setting. Is there a way to make it 1080P

I want to buy a HDV camera and I don´t know what´s the best for me. I make documentaries and fiction. I just have sold my Sony PD 150. Do you think the Sony Z1 must be my natural next step?

do you know that you also get 100 mbps recording straight to a G4 laptop? it only confirms this data rate size onto p2 cards on the FAQs.

help me out! i'm in a debate.

Up to two hours, depending on the deck and tape you use.

Just to be extra clear, since I don't have the camera yet to see, you're saying that I can record HD to tape, but I need a DVCPRO HD deck, therefore you are saying that I can NOT record to "HD tape" using the HVX "as-is", that is to say, using the tape transport that comes with the camera. Correct?

(I am researching for a producer who wants to use this camera, and I want him to go with it, I just want to make sure whether or not he can do what he tells me he thinks he can do, which is to buy this camera and record to DVCPRO HD tapes in this camera's out-of-the-box tape transport.)
 
Correct. The HVX uses miniDV tape, and only records standard miniDV to tape. You can record miniDV, DVCPRO, and DVCPRO 50 in standard def to p2. YOu can record DVCPRO HD 720p and 1080p in HD to p2.

But, only miniDV to tape.

You record DVCPRO HD to p2, to a firestore (or upcoming cineporter). To a laptop using your NLE, or DVRack HD 2.0

I'm new to the forum. Thanks for all the info.
Could use some expert advice. I have a dvx100a. Been happy with it. Thinking about hvx 200 with mk2 adapter. Good idea??
I'm more of an all around filmmaker and not an experienced Cinematographer (I know just enough to be dangerous), but I'm somewhat intelligent. I've done the usual research online, but haven't actually spoken to anyone who has done the same.
