Hi sprat, just to let you know, 1080i is a mis-label in the menu, it is actually 1080p. So 1080i/24p is actually 1080p/24p. The camera is a native progressive and has to "create" interlace footage from progressive frames by slicing progressive frames and "calling" them interlace.
Yes 1080p does have an advantage if you can handle the file sizes: the camera is capable of more res than the 720p mode delivers, and that is harnessed in 1080. The vertical res capability on the HVX is something more like 800 rather than 720, so the 1080 captures that data. You get a 300 pixel boost in both directions, vert and horiz, so 150 in each. Is it going to look remarkably different from 720? no, not like the night and day difference between 480 and 720... However there is a boost in res, great especially for animation plates or matching with other 1080 cameras on the set. 1GB/min.
