HPX300 Prores 422 Camera Evaluation clips

I came across this forum today when commencing my search for AVC-intra clips I could experiment with. I just updated my Adobe CS4 and avc-intra is now in the list of options in a drop down box. I'm firmly sitting on the do I/don't I fence with regards to the HPX300(301 here in the UK). I found just one downloadable example, which won't load. with just one failed example, I don't know if the clip is in an incorrect format/damaged - as the helpful message says, or just a format variety that Premiere still won't accept.

I fail to see why the Manufacturer doesn't make a few downloadable files available in mxf format so people can check compatibility.

As I'm also really new to P2 formats, I can't quite work out if the files being made available via this forum from Giuseppe are actually what I want, before I bother him for a password.

It does seem very strange that a camera generating so much internet comment doesn't have any 'real' clips available, apart from ones transcoded into other formats for on line distribution - weird!

I just tried AVCIntra100 1080/24p with the new release using that drop down menu.

It reports an unsupported format.

I don't believe it is working yet in PR 4.1

Hotchkiss,

I believe you need to be in at least an Intel machine to view the AVC-Intra. Then from there your FCP has to be 6.02. Short of either of those criteria, you could work in DVCPRO HD just fine.

Best,

CS4 will not support AVC-Intra at this point in time. I have heard this support is coming soon.

I do have one fairly nice file available but it is AVC-Intra 1080/24PN. If you want it jus send me a Private Message via this board and I will give you the link for download.

I believe some of them are good but from what I have read there are some that are just not a good representaion of what the camera can do in the hands of someone skilled in its use.

As I said Paul ping me a PM and I will send you a link.

Jan's 1080/24p go kart clip downloads quickly and looks pretty nice both converted to pro res and in native AVCIntra.

Send her a PM, and get the MXF file for import. A little over a minute long, with rich colors, and alot of vertical poles in the background to assess skew.

Just as an update, Jan sent me the files, and I can confirm that Adobe premiere CS4 v 4.1.0 does not import .mxf files - giving the error message "unsupported or damaged file." even when the file type is set to the avc-intra file type settings in the sequence-general tab.

Looks like I still have to wait a while.

Jan,

My Macbook Pro is an Intel machine (Core 2 duo). Can I watch AVC-I clips in P2CMS on this machine ? I'm not interested in using FCP for playback at the moment, just P2CMS for playback and viewing. Can it be done on said machine and P2CMS ?

Hi,

Seems like it would playback, but I am not totally sure, I need to check with the engineers. You may have dropped frames. And am I remembering from another thread that you were having issues with P2CMS? Maybe we should take this to the Private Message Board so that we don't needlessly spin this thread into a Hotchkiss support thread. Send me a Private Message with the details of your system and whay is working and not working. I will ask the engineers and if necessary turn you over to them so that you can get some help directly.

Best,

Jan

I'd argue against it, from four aspects:

1) it imposes extra work on the person uploading the footage
2) it rules out any footage from anyone who *doesn't* use FCP -- you can't author a prores clip on Windows
3) it makes the files bigger, thus taking up more storage space and more bandwidth
4) it modifies the footage. If the point is to see the footage, why not see it in its original format? And if Apple users need to convert the footage to prores, that's the workflow you'll have to go through when you get the camera anyway, right? So why not get used to it early on?

Edius reads ProResHQ just fine, doesn´t it?

Not as-is, you'd have to download the prores decoder, and even then you can't author prores clips. So basically you're asking to have a bigger file that is recompressed, versus the native file that EDIUS could play instantly, so ... ?
