There is a lot of smoke in the air for diffusion there, try that with the kinos. We used smoke for diffusion in our Spyfest entry along with a lot of soft lights to give the natural but lit look.

Just another suggestion, have you thought of doing all the coloring in post? There are several plug ins that will give you the look you're after. I think I even saw one that was called "Fight Club". Just an idea.
