HPX300 on a steadicam?

Working with steadicam, most likely you will want the widest angle possible. Standard
HPX300 lens (4.5 mm at wide angle) covers 60 degress of horizontal view. Super wide
angle lenses for professional 2/3 cameras, can cover up to 93 degrees.

Problem with hpx300 is that you simply cannot get that angle of view, as the widest
angle lens produced for 1/3 camcorder is 3mm, meaning you willl get around 69 degress
of horzintal view angle.

Other than that, you should take CMOS sensor in consideration , making a wipe pan move
with HPX300 will result ir jellyvision!

HPX500 :) i have one, and am perfectly happy with on my steadicam, though if you get into
serious steadicam work, you remote follow focus, and if you want live broadcast, then you
need wireless transmitter and so on and on...

steadicam work is expensive.

Lens for 2/3 inch cameras are expensive, if buying new, you would have to pay around 30k $
for brodcast quality wide angle lens, if used, i'd say around 10-12k $. I got my wide angle
angenieux lens on ebay for 14k.

Yes, I know... What's the price for HPX500 today?

This was shot with my Glidecame V-25.:

I'm new to glidecame/steadicam operation. I had been practicing with it for about a week around the house, and decided to take it out to test it in public when this guy in a green suit shows up. Lots of problems with the footage (audio, yaw, framing), it's live action, totally unplanned, and I didn't want to get run over by traffic when crossing the street.

The HPX300 outperformed my expectations, and I'm really disjointed with the skew created by this camera.

Advise on the operation is definitely welcome, I'm waiting to hear back from glidecam on a training class. In the mean time, I've been watching whatever videos I can fine, and looking at the Steadicam EPP video that's out there.

Gee... Disjointedness? That's way out of my english vocabulary... What do you mean? :)

Exactly, you see how distraught I am over this skew issue? :)

I''ve described skew problems shooting in another post. The most disappointing was shooting a protester, locked down across a 3-4 lane roundabout. She screamed and shook her poster board sign back and fourth about 4-6 inches. The bottom moved about 2-3 inches.

I was shocked to see that; I feel Panny misrepresented this camera; and I don't see how it could be used for anything but the tamest of action shots.

This may need a different thread, but I've been wondering, has anyone tried to do a match move with this camera? I'm guessing it won't solve or would cause horible cmera wobble because the markers will keep changing position from the skew. (granted, this is probably more of a CMOS issue in general)

this has been talked millions of times.. hpx300 is a good camera, you just have to know CMOS sensor limitation. Every CMOS camera has this - ex1, ex3 etc... people want real full hd? panny threw in CMOS sensor, there you go!

Some of the very best Steadicam shots are shot with a long lens.

Having to shoot wide on a Steadicam is only if you a) can't control focus, or. b) you aren't that good at it.

Just like handheld, wide is generally more forgiving with stability, however the statement that you can't shoot tighter shots with long lenses on Steadicam is purely a misnomer. Unfortunately some directors also think this and as a result don't get the full potential of Steadicam available to them.

Wow... that was really cool shots!!! What cam and what kind of steadicam did you use? And were you on a Segway as well?

Really cool! Nice done!

it was me on segway..

Mikko, yes, i agree. that's why steadicam , and as any other mean like dolly,
jib etc has to be used as a tool to achieve the desired effect, not just to for
the sake of usage...

Still though, for live action, that looked great and plus who doesn't love green man. How was your back after that "run-around"? lol I'd imagine that was a pretty heavy

It was not that bad, and green man was great. He turned out to be a local high school student.

I received it about 10 days earlier, and I put it on 2-3 times a day for about 30 minutes. The sled weighs 32lbs. That's with a Mattebox/FF and 2 v-mount batteries.

I changed out the L7-Pro monitor for the Manhattan 720p LCD, and despite running a composite signal with the HPX300, it looks spectacular. I power the camera, Microbeam 128, and LCD through the LEMO connectors.

I'm really pleased with the setup, and the springs are set very low, so it could easily handle more weight.

A couple weeks later we had the Keene Pumpkinfest, where I covered a flashmob dance routine Friday Night and Saturday Morning. then I had it on for aobut 4 hours Saturday afternoon.

Sunday my muscles were a bit sore, but I was totally exhaused. I spent most of the day sleeping. :)
