HPX170 Verdict?

On the strength of that review and Barry's comments in an earlier thread I've just ordered an HPX to add to the fleet of HVXs we already own.

thanks, great report.

That's great. Post back and tell us how you like it when it arrives.

Dan, I also want to thank you for writing such a great article. I've owned a DVX100A, HVX200, and now an HPX170. What a ride it has been!

Me too! That's why I wrote the article, all three of the cams pictured are mine. I was just hired for a two camera shoot out in Scottsdale and the client has a DVX100 so he wants me to shoot on my DVX100 so that the footage will match.

I have had that camera since 2002 and it is still making me money. Can't beat that!

Dan,

Very well written and informative article. Thank you!

Chip mentioned an article that you wrote on shooting a TV pilot earlier. Do you have a link to that article? I'd be interested in reading that as well.

Giant screaming fireballs of hysteria had nothing to do with it, other than to damage individual owners. Look at Jay Rodriguez complaining that he lost $1800 worth of work because some producer read somewhere on the internet that this particular camera has this outlandish wobble. If people want to talk about "having the users best interest at heart" I think stuff like that is far more damaging to the end users than someone saying "hold on, this is not some outrageous showstopper, this is a minor inconvenience."

Tell me about it. I'm not trying to add to anything here or to dump on Dino but the producer's wife researched the 170 after I told them the camera that I would use and they found some great info on it. They also found Dino's show stopper thread with the help of good ol' Google and that in turn, stopped my involvement in the project. bummer. It is what it is though, no hard feelings towards Dino. He brought up a legit concern which, IMO, helped a ton of us out in the long run. :) I just wished he made the post sound a lil less "the sky is falling" like, that's all... lol :)

Hi SumFun:

I am Dan, I wrote the article, but Ken deserves all of the accolades since he hires me to write all of these articles and publishes them on his ad free, easy to navigate site.

Thanks so much!

Dan

Dan,
Won't your HVX200 mini DV tape footage match your client's DVX footage in 4:3 as long as you shoot progressive and not interlace?

Dan,

This site is a treasure trove of good information, and you are definitely one of the top sources. Thank you for all the work you put into your posts and articles, and for your willingness to share. Keep it coming!

Have you ever shot an HVX200 against the DVX? Not even close. I did a shoot for a friend, he had his DVX100 and I brought my DVX and I used my HVX just for slow motion of the event. In cutting back and forth (all three shot DV), shot in 24P, the DVX footage kind of fell apart next to the HVX footage. HVX had much better colors, dynamic range and detail. DVX looked good but HVX looked much better though.

Thanks, I plan on writing more for Ken this year, at least 1-2 more articles and I am sure that we will cook up some good ones for next year as well.

I also write the Audio Assist column for HD Video Pro Magazine and I just completed a few more feature stories for them as well.

Thanks for the kind words!

Dan
