HPX170-Transfer P2 contents via external hard drive?

Does anyone use an external firewire hard drive connected directly to the camera's firewire port to transfer the contents of P2 cards? Does it work well? How about the USB mode? My laptop does not have a PCMCIA slot so I am looking for alternatives. I realize that using the camera for the transfer will tie the camera up for the transfer period but it my situation that is ok. Thanks!
 
USB or FW drives must be externally powered.

Many mount the p2 card on the laptop using USB2 or FW and the cam and transfer that way.
 
The FW Transfer can verify the transfer, whereas the USB cannot, so I tend to error on the side of caution and dump the footage from the FW port. I haven't had any issue thus far, except to the fact that sometimes it is indeed quite slow.
