HPX170 Lens Wobble Improved

can someone do a gentle tap test with the lens in wide angle instead of telephoto? I am curious how perceptible that is. Thanks.

I finally have my camera in front of me again, as I have been traveling, and I was going to post some video clips from my camera - but - there really is no point as it looks just like everyone else wobble.

And to confirm my own question, yes the wobble/shift is as evident in wide angle as it is in telephoto.

I think we're still going to wait until Panasonic has an official statement and policy in place regarding the HPX170 issue. Hopefully not too long though.

Thanks,
Prof. Dunn
La.

yeah im with you. i'm just waiting for this, then i'll make my purchase.

Grab it up from SpecComm. Mines came in and has only as much play as my 200A did. Movin' on to actual shootin' now. =P

can you confirm that you have zero lens wobble when focussing now that you have had the "fix" done?

Thanks.

It's not Zero. It's the same as the 200A. Wobbles more toward the left than the right, but nothing that's going to interfere with my operations.

If wobble was zero it would not be a shock mount. The shock mount isn't a bad idea, but in this camera the wobble is exagerated and can interfere with some standard operations.

Update from Europe:
According the infoes I've collected until now, here in Europe all the camera's are equally affected, both hpx171 and hmc151: actually people don't buy these cameras until Panasonic will tell them what is going to do.

Panasonic Europe is informated about the issue and has said that surely it will be fixed in all affected cameras, but we're still waiting to know HOW and WHEN.

Regards

Gary

hummm... picking mine up tomorrow... HPX171... I knew abot the wobblegate and bought it anyway... scared now... I guess in a couple of weeks I'll be taking it back to my dealer... what do you guys think? ... I guess I won't have to send it, just take it back to them... just rambling... seemed like the best thing to do, instead of getting the 200a I mean... Just a Question... what was it again the advantage of SDI output?

How silly. It probably doesn't eat a lot'a battery up, but I would like to be able to turn it off.

Kholi,

Doesn't it turn off when facing inward to the body? I've been impressed by how
long the batteries last so far, and I always use the LCD. I use an LH80 on the camera handle and the built-in LCD for waveform.

The eyepiece is what I mean. It doesn't turn off, at all. =(

Just found this thread now and read a bit of the last pages and thought "this is probably overblown". The I watched the video. Wow, just wow that is f-ed.

I don't want to sound rude or anything but this thread is difficult enough to navigate through as it is so can we stick to the topic please.

If you need to ask a question about an unrelated issue please start a new thread.

Call me kooky, but when you are talking about a $5,000 camera that is basically a pro-sumer device, I think you can expect a certain level of flimsiness. You are getting a lot for the money. Afterall, the HPX2000 is $25,000, minus lens. The HPX3000 is $48,000 minus lens. The HPX170 will produce nice pictures, but ruggedness? I'm not counting on it. I know $5,000 is still a chunk of change, but honestly, don't expect the same build quality as the broadcast models. You just gotta be more careful handling the HPX170. It's a similar situation between, say, a Nikon D40 and it's pro cousin, the D3. They are both digital cameras from the same manufacturer. THe D40 is not expected to be as durable as the D3 and the 5x price difference reflects that build quality put into the D3.

how could panasonic have aken this long to supposedly fix all the concerns of the hvx200 only to introduce a whole batch of other issues and charge the consumer shipping on top of that to fix their problem.

bad bad buisness and imo, the little guys are still being slighted by the big corporations. Was contemplating the hpx but after this thread pany will no longer receive my money.

Sd chipset, now this. I love pannys look but, at this point it is no longer worth it for me and for individuals who will eventualy seek to sale their hpxs, the buyer will never be able to get out of their mind if the cam being sold to them will exibit these issues, and will cause resale alue on these cams to drop considerably.

Kooky is as kooky does. I any event, I am waiting to get into the HD camera scene. I think there is going to be a greater selection of high quality equipment at mid-level pricing ($9-15,000) by this time next year. In the mean time, I will rent what I need and hold off investing in such a fast moving, ever changing market.
