HPX170 - A Second Look

Question to Jan or anyone for that matter,
Having MANUAL audio level controls are clearly a given, but in my field of work,
having AUTO audio level control is equally important. My questions are:

A- I understand the HVX-200A has both MANUAL and AUTO audio level control. Is this correct?
B-Does the HPX-170 have both MANUAL and AUTO audio level control or just MANUAL?

Thanks for taking my question.

Thanks for the reply Barry. Please go to this official Panasonic site.

https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/sales_o/p2/hvx200a/index.html

Then scroll down to where it says "Audio Dials and Flexible Input Selection".
There you will see that it clearly states that AUTO LEVEL CONTROL CAN BE TURNED
ON OR OFF.
Can you please clarify what they are talking about. Beyond that, if these cameras do not have any AUTO AUDIO LEVEL CONTROL, is there some kind of limiting device in the camera. It's hard for me to imagine no limiting control in these cameras due to the zero headroom of digital audio.

Thanks in advance,

dan

I see that on the panasonic site Dan, but there is no auto level control as such.

It is probably refering to the MIC ALC function, but this is actually a limiter

Just out of curiousity, why would you want Auto gain control on the audio, I mean it's really gonna mess up your sound?

Hi Derrick,
Thanks for the response. I often shoot meetings where audio levels change dramatically, especially when you have a group in a large room with varying output levels from different speakers. Been using a Panasonic AG-DVC30 for the past 3 years. Absolutely love the camera, and I consistently utilize the auto gain control. It does a great job. Many cameras come with the option for Auto Level control on the audio including the JVC ProHD line. For run and gun style shooting, it's very freeing to not have to worry about audio levels as well. I understand the need for manual control and have a camera that is strictly manual. Many times I suffered the consequences of overmodulated sound due to extreme peaks. On the Pany's, there is the ALC as you mentioned. Can you give me some insight into the efficiencies of the ALC circuit or lack thereof. Thanks Derrick.

The ALC is really useful. It will do the job most of the time. It's good to limit the volume when the sound source is going up. Most of the time, it will avoid clippings. You need to have a really strong sound to saturate the input and clip. But it does appends if the sound is really to hign.

I know it was said that the HPX170 would come with a 16GB P2 card and a copy of Barry's book. I'm looking at B&H's listing for the HPX170 right now and it doesn't list the P2 card or the book as included items. Can anyone confirm whether or not the camera is actually shipping with these items from US vendors?

When you order in the US make sure that you get an agreement to the free card and Book. If it does not have it then it is gray.

Best,

Jan

I just posted this on their site ,before I read your post.I sure hope it 's a mistake.

I just called BH and they can't verify that it will come with the card and book. I'm guessing that it will be included, since BH is a big guy here in the U.S. but BH needs to clarify fast. I cancelled my preorder.

Can we get verification that the filter size is 72mm?
I am going to buy a step down ring today or tomorrow and want to make sure I get the right one.
Thanks.
Robert

My preorder from AVS is coming with the book and the 16GB P2 card for sure.
The account executive mentioned it before I even asked.
All the cameras from Auth dealers come with the card and the book-is my understanding.

I paid less than 4900, but more than 4800, the account executive asked that I not say the exact amount for some reason.
If you look earlier in this thread you can see how to contact him.
His name is Julian Diaz, he is giving good deals to DVXusers.

Oh, lol... I read that a few days ago. He was out on Friday, I was transfered to his assistant and he/she never picked up the phone. I was on hold for almost ten minutes...

Jay,
That sux. I just leave messages on his voicemail and he calls me back. I think out of the 10 or so times I have talked to him I got him in the office only once.

If you like, try again, but just leave mail on his voicemail and skip talking to her, she can't do anything without him anyway.

Spoke to him about an hour ago, he's a really nice dude. Got pricing, I'm def. using him..... Thanks for the heads up my friend. I owe you one, lol.
