HPX-3000 / P2 Workflow

Hi Peter,

What lens are you using?
I'm getting ready to shoot a verite style doc in 3 different countries (US, Brazil and Indonesia) my workflow will be very similar but I'm looking for low cost wide angle lens solutions.
Both Canon and Fujinon have announced low cost HD wide angles at NAB but I haven't seen any available yet for sale.

Hey Alex,

I'm using the Fujinon 13x4.5 BERM. It's a fantastic wide angle lens, really the best out there I think, but it is not low cost unfortunately. I paid about $23k for mine new. You can get them as "B stock" though for about $20k, and I know you can get them used for less. If you are looking for something affordable I would pick one up used and have it checked out thoroughly. It is an awesome lens for docs!

I'm in the works with a new setup (including some off the wall variables) which I'll be sure to keep you guys posted about in the near future. If all goes well, Panasonic will have a showcase system to be proud of on network television.
Cheers!

What a great thread! These are the exact issues I've been dealing with on an eposodic in Athens, Ga.

Suppatime, or anyone, what was your final set up?

We started the show with some fun equipment, HPX-3000, and the P2 Mobile, pretty cool device but completely the wrong machine for this workflow......USB 2.0....much to slow.

So I'm now moving to a lap-top based solution and was curious if you've solved your workflow, to some degree?

It sounds like it's something along these lines,

From the rooter to the tooter......

HPX-3000 to 9x16gb card

Duell card reader to PCMCIA slot?
or 5 card reader to FW 800?

MBP 15"/17" running P2 CMS.....P2 Genie????Any preferences?

Out to:
1-750gb shuttle drive (to editors)
1-750gb 'archive drive'(keep on truck untill confirmed from editors)

Are you planning to swap ports? OR....do you use the duel FW 800 > pcmcia slot adapter as you main port for the 5 card reader and a drive, leaving the onboard FW 800 port for an additional drive?

MAn what a great thred, wish I found it a week ago.

Thanks Peter,

I'm familiar with the qualities of the 13x4.5 and I really wish I could afford one.
But unfortunately it's not the case.
I tried exactly this package for my last job and ended up using a HVX200. I've also tested the EX-1 and after a few reviews with the producer we put it aside. We both hated the rolling shutter problems.
Anyway, I have been dealing of this dilemma for the past 6 months. I love DVCPRO HD but I'm quite over the HVX limitations, specially the VF and LCD, long DOF, etc...
The EX-1 is not an option, but the HPX500 with a wide angle at this point is over 35K...
I'll be checking the new lenses asap.

The P2 Genie is very simple and efficient, but as soon as you get used to the P2CMS you'll love the possibilities. Panasonic has been investing on research and listening to suggestions, the program is better each new release.

I recommend at least RAID O for the first transfer. You never know. Check the CalDigits or G-Raids, they both have FW800 models.

The Duel work fine but a P2 Gear can be very useful if you can afford one.

Good luck.

Don't you mean Raid 1? Raid 0 is the riskier RAID, Raid 1 is the mirrored, duplicate version. Right?

Archiving

Archiving

If you're looking for a reliable, inexpensive way to archive your footage after the shoots, I'd suggest going to tape drives. Not videotape, but data backups on tape like DLT or LTO.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Linear_Tape
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linear_Tape-Open

It's not random access, but it works perfectly as a backup if you lose hard drives, and is cheap enough that you can justify making two copies of everything and storing them in physically different locations.

Quantum even makes a drive that is aware of MXF files, so you can restore based on timecode of your clips!

Tapes for that unit run about $40 for 400GB. It might make a decent working system if you were transferring footage around a lot, otherwise a more basic 'dumb' drive would be cheaper, and you could just use hard drives to work from.

The dual port is to use the 5 card reader and the Firewire800 hard drive at the same time; without it, the hard drive would need to be powered off of the MacBook's USB 2.0 port, which isn't really fast enough for what I'm going to need it to do.

I'm with davide. I don't quite understand the necessity for the dual port FW800 adapter. Since the MBP already has one FW800 card built in, wouldn't you only have the need for one additional FW800 port? Then you would have 2 ports, one for the PCD20 and one for the hard drive.

Unless there's something I'm missing; maybe the speed is greater with your dual-port configuration?

Does anyone know of a laptop manufacturer that produces one with both eSata and FW800 built in? Or two FW800 ports? Or even just one eSata port built in? Is that really too much to ask?
