Mark Johnson - "CHOW BABY"

Damn! ... Damn damn damn. ... I just went to see Snakes On a Plane and I realize now that it will no doubt make my little project seem less original. Not to mention that it's hard to compete with a major studio's effects department. It was a hell of a hoot and so over the top.

I guess the purpose of this little festival, though, is more about learning the craft and being creative. I can say that I'm having a great time. Moreover, I've really come to appreciate the new friends and colleagues I've met here. Thanks Brandon, Kholi, Trey, BlueSpider, R.L. Scott, MovieStunts, g0ldenb0y55 and, of course, Jack Daniel Stanley. These days I spend a lot of time asking myself "What would Jack do?"

This is a little off topic, but I guess its my thread so I can do what I want. In addition to Chow Baby, I am constructing an all-animated little 3D sci-fi short. Luckily, I've hit sort of a nice little hiatus in the usually busy forensics schedule so I can do this "fun" stuff in my spare time. Since there's no camera work it probably is of limited interest to anyone here. Still, I think it's going to be pretty cool. Here's a frame from the WIP of "The Prey". I got the 3D earth from a very talented effects artist in Germany who built a whole shader tree for this thing that does all the atmosphere effects accurately. ADDENDUM: I see that Trey just posted some of the UFO storyboards for the opening of Slim's Revenge. This 3D model is going to be put to good use on his behalf to create his effect:

That model looks INSANE dude! Awesome stuff!! And hey, it's been great gettin' to know you too! Nice work on that stuff.

Dope model, mang. Can't wait to see the footage for Chow Baby, though. I want to see some Live Action integrated with your skillz.

In case some of you are interested and are not following Brandon's Smuggler's Ransom thread, here's a little outline of the effect I'm doing to transform a day shot to night. I'll be using some of these techniques in Chow Baby as well:

Holy crap, Mark.

That's such a great mini-tutorial.

This thread is proably the most in-depth special effects thread I've seen on DVXuser.

Great shiet!

I would never have the discipline to sit down and learn all this 3D,cg stuff....that's why I have huge respect for people like Mark.

I'm working on the 3D snake this week. Below is one of the "bump maps" for the snake's head. Basically, this is a 2D image that is applied to the model to add depth. Wherever the image is WHITE the geometry is raised and wherever the image is BLACK, the geometry is depressed. Thus, by applying this map to the snake model's head, I can create surface scales and fissures without having to actually build that geometry. This is much more efficient than trying to create individual scales and surfaces for the snake model. In fact, using bump maps is probably one of the biggest secrets to creating CGI realism with today's technology.

This is one of the texture maps that I'm working on for the snake. As mentioned above, the black&white image affects the surface of the model. This COLOR MAP merely applies color to the corresponding area so that the surface looks realistic. This map will be wrapped around the snake 360 degrees all along its body (except for the head). I build these maps in Photoshop so that you can't see a seam where the map overlaps itself. I used photos of snakes I found on the net for this image. This particular map will repeat over and over the length of the snake so that I don't have to build the whole snakeskin.

I hate snakes but this stuff is great! This is a movie I'm looking forward to because I am sure it's gonna be a huge lesson in 3D.

With Jack's new announcement about your involvement in REKINDLED... wow.

I dunno how you juggle the weight, Mark. But, kudos to you. Not only are you stepping in with a great and promising project, but you're helping with so many others.

Proves that not all California people are bad, huh?

Looking forward to more updates y0.

This is an excellent thread!

Thanks a lot Vislaw, I can't wait for some more updates.
Your thread actually made me consider trying some 3d for the Horrorfest but I think I'll stick to clay and latex, hehe. :zombie_smiley: Might be hard to learn 3d in one month.

Thanks again.

Best, M.

Momentum continues to build! I'm pleased to announce the addition of two new members of the cast who will be part of a little pre-opening title sequence. First, is the adorable David Johnson (my 11-year old son) ...

Next is the adorable "BUDDY" who is owned by a friend. (David has a wonderful cat but the little **** won't take direction for beans. Not that Buddy is that much better, but at least he will chase a ball!!!) ...

It's because he's superhuman ... and he lived through law school, passed the bar, and was a trial lawyer, working on three projects is probably cake after that.

Buddy is ready for his closeup ...
