How to Turn a Patch of Earth Into a Forest

My 5-yr-old daughter inspired me to make this video after she came up with an idea to save the environment.

The tiny patch of earth is a genuine phenomenon in our garden.

I've kept the style fairly straightforward and merry to reflect her personality and to convey the message in a way that could engage people to reflect and share the thought.

It was produced in an afternoon.

Nicely done! It's refreshing to see something that doesn't rely on heavy/dramatic color grading or overly-abundant shallow focus. The editing pace was great, and the story beautifully illustrated.

There are several shots that were overexposed... I don't know about the 5DmkII, but I know that the T2i and 7D tend to meter hot and require pulling back a couple of notches from what the camera wants in order to keep exposure under control.

Also, be careful about using copyrighted music... it's best to find something royalty-free, or licensed through Creative Commons.

But again, it was an enjoyable ride (and really helped brighten up a gloomy end-of-the-work-day Monday).

Thanks for the feedback.

Do you know any good site where I can find quality stock music? I've looked around and most of it is just instrumental - or fairly cheesy.

There are plenty of places to get royalty-free stock music, both cheap/free and pricey. (Pond5, Incompetech.com, Fresh Ideas, Digital Juice, and many more.) What you're going to find with stock music, though, is that it's pretty much strictly instrumental.

There are several artists, though, who have some really great stuff that is free to use through Creative Commons licensing:

And this page, available through the link above, has a great directory of CCL music searchable by genre, including indie rock:

Many of the sites you mentioned have great music - but many of them have rather irritating and slow user interfaces. Searching can be tedious and complicated at best!

I finally found some music I can use on pond5.com - their interface for music is extremely easy to browse through and they seem to have a lot of good stuff (not just instrumental).

I also see that Vimeo have started up their own music store - some great tracks - but not for commercial use as far as I understand. Also very easy to navigate.

I'm just pointing this out for anyone else struggling to find music for their videos.

Thanks again for your help.

Yeah, I just saw the new Vimeo Video Store a couple days ago. It looks really interesting, and it's great to have another resource.

Just remember, as far as copyrighted and non-licensed music goes, it doesn't matter if you aren't making money on it... it's still copyright infringement if you use it without permission. (That's more for anyone else who reads this.)

Glad you were able to find some useful (and legally usable) music!
