How to Remove a Stuck Nikon-EF Adapter?

Just got a Nikkor 50mm f/1.4 lens and an adapter for the 7d. I placed the adapter on the lens and it seemed fine. However, while on the camera, turning the aperture dial resulted in the lens coming loose. So I tightened the lens on the adapter while the two were on the camera. I believe I turned to the right. Now the aperture dial is very difficult to turn and the lens is obviously turned to the right too much because of where the numbers and the metal clip are located.

On or off the camera, it's impossible to remove the adapter. Am I supposed to press the black lever while turning? Rather challenging without a third hand, but I tried it. Does it turn loose to the left? That's the direction I've been mainly trying with no luck.

There is a tiny bit of play. Turning to the left results in a hard stop. To the right, and I can hear a little spring or snap.

edit: got it off. But it seems that no matter how I put it on, it clamps the aperture dial, making it very difficult to turn. How could the adapter affect the aperture ring? I'm going to unscrew the metal tab on the aperture ring.

edit 2: So on this particular lens that metal tab was getting pushed up against the adapter, thereby unscrewing it when I was attempting to change the aperture. Removal was easy. Now it works fine, although the adapter is a bit loose, which is what I've heard to expect. Bit of gaffer's tape should do the trick.
