HOW TO: Keeping the sensor clean and dust free

I guess the easy way would be to keep a lens on it and only change glass with the cam powered off. (and don't change glass in a sandstorm)

one way is to have an assistant when you change the lens. when you take off the lens immediately cover the opening on the camera with your hand, the assistant then takes the just removed lens from you. then the assistant hands you the new lens to you. you uncover then put on the new lens. this minimizes the sensors exposure to dirt, etc...

Next time your at the drug store pick up one of those cheap $2 nose bulb things and you can use it to blow dust off the sensor. Basically the same thing as the giottos rocket air blower, but much cheaper and not as cool looking.

Don't be stealing my talc powder trick. that's how i get the "film look". i'm working on a new "T-LOG" profile (talc+high contrast) and a reverse LUT that involves q-tips and vaseline.

also, i coated my sensor using a red sharpie. then i changed my craigslist ad to "scarlet for rent"

That's funny...

These blowers cost less than $10. How much are you saving by going with a "cheap" one from a drug store?

More the ease of being able to go to the corner drug store and grabbing something cheap. Besides isn't the Giottos rocket $20 or some such? I don't mind paying top dollar for good gear, but for something like that give me the $2 option.

+1 Buy a blower
+1 Change lenses with camera pointed down
+1 Change in "controlled" conditions.... no sandstorms, wind, moisture, etc...

I probably wouldn't suggest using your hand to cover the front... there is a chance dead skin and/or moisture from your hands could get inside your camera. But yes, a lens cover or some hard plastic cover is best.
Generally though, pointing your camera down when changing lenses is all you need to do in the field. Then maybe once a week, using a blower on your sensor and around your lenses.

I got this Giottos kit from B&H for 13 bucks. Invaluable. If you have small kids they may try and steal the rocketship, though.

Hey guys,

Does the FS100 have a piece of glass covering the sensor? I.e. if you use a brush to clean the sensor, are the bristles touching the sensor itself or a protective layer of glass?

Sorry for the dumb question... the FS is my first interchangeable lens video cam.
