Last year when going back home from a 10 hour shot day I was changing to the right lane and I checked all the mirrors....but as I was starting to change I see the other car nearly hitting my car.....I was fast enough to go back to my lane...but I think that my heart rate didn't go back to normal till I parked the car at home..... I hate dead spots...

Klick & clack (car talk) have been advocating this for years, Ive done this for sometime also, but it takes some getting used to, you rely much more on your rearview mirror.

Most drivers here in Knoxville forget that they even have mirrors.

Or turn signals.

I was always taught that when a car leaves the view of your rear-view mirror that it should immediately show up in one of the side mirrors. All three mirrors should work together and cover the full field of view.

Does this work in the same fashion? I'll have to try it.
I usually don't set them by leaning over like that.

Good video though. Pretty helpful.

I was always taught to snap your head to the blind spot before you change lanes or turn anyways. I'm in the habit of doing it and never had any problems.

But I'll try this trick.

my grandmother has a much simpler system. just lay on the horn and go for it. if someone is there, they'll move.

So I tried the mirror thing .. and you know; as disconcerting it is not to see the side of my own car to give me reference; it actually appears to work quite well.

This is really useful to know. I'm in the habit of looking back without mirrors though before switching lanes, and I don't know if I'll ever stop doing that even if my mirrors cover the entire field of view.

Yeah I tried it too. It works great, who would've thought? lol at UGAFAN! That one gave me a hilarious mental image.

Despite having a driver's license in the States for 15 years, I had to take a minimum of three lessons and I was required to pass a driving test in order to receive an Israeli driver's license. This actually turned out to have been a good thing because it corrected some bad habits I had developed.

But what was interesting was the fact that driving instructors' cars in Israel have two side-view mirrors on each door. One is positioned as described in this video and sits on the other, which is situated the "old" way. My car now has this mirror setup and I like it; however, for some reason I don't trust it 100% and only rely on it alone if there is no time for me to turn my head. For me, it's backup.
