My personal opinion is that it makes sense to rent electronic equipment and buy all of the non-electronic support equipment that you can find used. Electronic equipment like cameras, monitors, and recorders all lose value quickly over time. Support equipment like good quality stands, tripods, lights, etc. seem to maintain a fairly steady value on the used market. In many cases, you can buy used equipment that would pay itself back in saved time and rental costs in a week of work. Then, when it is time to sell you can usually get all of your money back or even make a profit if you originally found a good deal on the used market. Lenses also seem to hold their value. Certain items that are in low demand like filters and lighting accessories can sell for the cost of a couple days of rentals. Cameras, however, don't.
