How much does a lens affect picture quality?

Newbish question for sure but what's does the lens bring to the table beyond aperture and focal length in regards to picture quality? I already know the answer I guess but I wonder to what degree. Just to use one case study, if everything is equal (focal length, exposure, WB), would you be able to tell much of a difference between say a Zeiss lens and a Canon lens? Would that difference be subtle or would it be quite dramatic? Thanks for any help!

Lenses with the same focal length and aperture can vary greatly in design and quality control. Not all lenses with the same specs are designed the same. Modern lenses use new technology in design and manufacturing processes that make them different from older lenses. However, I wouldn't say there is any methodology to telling whats better. Its all quite subjective IMO. However, it is different.

As far as for resolution and sharpness in video, most lenses are more than adequate and show little difference between cheaper and more expensive glass. However, better glass will give you some things that are worth paying the extra money for, such as better Bokah (the quality of background blurring), less distortion and flare, and larger constant aperture for better results in lower light. Constant aperture (fixed through the whole zoom range) is important in video if you want to be able to zoom during shots.
