How many would compete?

We may be better off offering token prizes (like a box of tapes) just so people don't think that this is supposed to be a contest about prizes.

Not saying that the prizes given weren't amazingly amazing, and I'm sure greatly appreciated by the winners - I'd agree that token prizes would be perfectly adequate, and certainly wouldn't take anything away from the fests.

Heck, there's plenty people/companies on here that are flogging their stuff and could offer some prizes without having to have moderators fork out mega-dollars. Heck, I reckon if someone asked me nicely, we'd throw a VIDLED in the prize-pool. In fact, maybe we will without being asked! ;-)

There are dozens and dozens of reputable film festivals in the United States alone, with plenty of competition from other filmmakers and cash prizes on the table, so the idea of "cheating" to gain entry into Spyfest is a little...juvenile.

Thing is, if they open it up to A1, then might as well let FX1, V1U, HD110 etc. in as well, makes no sense to limit to just two companies.

true dat jade, it may as well be an HDV (the whole consortium; Sony, Canon and JVC) event.

Why not just have a "Other Cameras" category? It'd be like "Best Foreign Film". ;)

Seriously, it doesn't bother me in the least. I think there'd be plenty of involvement in people's individual film threads despite not being dvx/hvx originated. There are far too many cool people here to leave the "others" out of all the fun.

There could be a few decent prizes donated. Enough to make an incentive I think.

Personally, I look forward to the critiques more than trying to be the overall winner. I would want to know what I'm doing right and wrong and learn from it.

Ooooooh. Nice suggestion. Just like the Oscars have "Best Foreign Film" (which the other countries may not exactly think of "foreign", but hey). Maybe that's the middle ground that everyone can agree on, in order to give it a try?

I think it's cool. I think it'd be good for the community overall, because it opens up the field and gets others involved.

Sundance has all kinds of categories. Why not have a SpyFest OC fest? Kind of like Slamdance. ;)

It's all good. I'll be the first to commit. :)

Keep the ideas coming, because we're trying to sort this out for the Spy-Fest. It would good to have some numbers though for you Canon (and other non-Panny) owners that would seriously enter Spy-Fest.

Thats a cool suggestion for sure.

Agree on the community of people working together thing in Katrina. Same thing in Threading the needle. Really wish I could get something really happening here, though theres only 1 0r 2 DVX users here, and they seem shy. :P Im in contact with a few groups now to do some cooperative stuff though.

But would they all be under the non-compete category or would there possibly be a 'best other camera' prize? That might be a good idea...

Just its own competition category. How about an HV 20 for grand prize? :) Maybe a wide angle adapter for runner up.

Who knows? Lots of things are possible.

I'd say there should be a prize (or at least a title) for the best OC, just like there's an Oscar for the best foreign film. And hey, Barlow, if you can swing Canon into donating an HV20 for a grand prize, we'll give it away no doubt! :) I think Jarred's wallet, and my wallet, are still smarting over buying the HorrorFest HVX, so we may not be so much into buying one, but look how VariZoom stepped up to the plate this time...

Ewh, now were making it interesting!

I am all go for the OTHER CAMERAS category, which concerns 1/3" 24p Cameras.

And maybe that other camera shoot could still get the BEST OF FEST prize.

I like that idea as a starting point, though.

The prizes are a bit of a red herring because let's face it--everyone is gonna want to know which film is #1 regardless of camera. You can break it down further by DVX/HVX vs. Other, but this proposal would essentially open the fest to all (sub $10K 24p?) cams. I have some concerns about the fest becoming unmanageable if it gets too big, but we might be ok.

That's the last thing I want to see. I enjoy it as a spectator and, if I can get this script down to six minutes, as a particpant as well.

Hopefully limiting to the Sub10k cameras will keep a balance. I'd love to see Disjecta reappear, as well as Elton and other OTHER CAMERA users.

Well, I'm REALLY happy that you guys are considering opening the door to other members.

I think an easy way to keep a lid on the amount of films entered would be to only allow members who have a certain post count to enter or even a certain "date joined" limit so that some new dudes who caught wind of the fest doesn't just pop in and then leave.

sheesh, you consider a "coffee" film to easily fall under "OTHER CAMERAS"?

Shame on you!
