C300: how good is the evf in the c300 mark2

Was wondering how useful c300 mark2 owners find the evf.
It seems that the c200 will get the same viewfinder and if the quality is lacking it might be better to get the c200b the one without one

The quality is pretty decent, not great. Amira viewfinder is nicer.

For me the LCD can be made so bright on the C300 Mark II that I rarely find a need to use the EVF. Plus, the camera is a bit heavy to hold in a cradle to the eye position while using the EVF. On the C100 Mark II the LCD isn't as bright, and the camera is lighter, so I use the EVF more often on it, often while cradling to the eye.

I do still use the EVF on the C300 Mark II sometimes, just not very often.

That said, I wouldn't get a C200B. Costs more money and when you do want an EVF, it isn't there. Perhaps if you knew you were doing a lot of gimbal work and the C200 didn't work with it. I do Steadicam work so the viewfinder doesn't get in the way really.

Thanks Eric,

The evf on the c100 mark1 is really bad, so never found a use for it.
I found the c100 mark2 to be a bit cumbersome on the ronin as the evf restricted the tilt motion, the mark 1 works great.

But there are always workarounds and its good to know that the evf is at least usable.

The C200 doesn't have a built in monitor like the C100. I've found that the C300 II evf can be especially useful when you otherwise don't have a monitor attached. With the C200b, you will have to attach a monitor of some sort in order to see anything. When you need an EVF, it's good to have. I often use mine with a monopod. Or just to grab a quick shot. I wouldn't buy the C200b unless I was absolutely sure it was only going to end up in a spot in which I could never have use of an EVF.

IMO, the C300 Mark II EVF is really good. I use it pretty often on my Rhino Rig, monopod, handholding, and just changing settings without having to attach the monitor. There is no lag and it is very sharp. It is essential for really sunny days shooting outdoors as well. I would definitely get it but everyone's needs are different.

Agreed. It is excellent. There are dedicated EVFs that are better, but it is great in my opinion. The C100 EVF is garbage. I read a lot of reports that the C100 II EVF was "a significant improvement" over the original. Was severely disappointed when I received my C100 II. The C300 II EVF is a much bigger upgrade over the C100 II's EVF compared to the upgrade of the C100 II's over the C100's.

that's reassuringly good to know :)

This guy clearly has no idea what he's talking about! He's only looked at my C300 Mark II viewfinder once or twice at best.

C100 Mark II and C300 Mark II EVF are pretty similar in quality, with both being pretty good, but not great. C100 Mark I EVF is pretty bad, but still better than the FS7's EVF.

Thrice, actually. Even once was enough though. I stand by my statements.

I've got a mkii and I'd say it's usable, but not amazing. Works for stripped-down or monopod, but the image is a bit small. I have peaking on 90% of the time when using it as it's just not that sharp.

OLED is the way to go for EVFs. Even on the GH5, it's so amazingly clear and sharp with great colours/contrast.

I see that Canon are encouraging people to pair their expensive EVF-V70 with the C200... it looks great but surely they could just bump the included evf to something like the GH5 has.

Ok, one person has looked through 'X' EVF's, another has looked through 'X' EVF's more... opinions will differ massively.
Like mine.
I think it's absolutely amazing.
But then I just came from an FS5 ;)

C300 MKII EVF is definitely useable, I found no trouble with it at all. I found it a good step up from C300 MKI. Canon's evf for the C700 and the Varicams EVF are a big step up again.

I shoot a fair amount in stripped down mode with my Mk2 whch means I use the EVF almost exclusively. My $.02 is that the EVF is certainly better than the Mk1 and WAYYYY better than the C100. I also have a Gratical that I use with a small shoulder rig on the camera which is great becasue it shows a larger image , can display WFM info outside of pcture area, etc.
Makign comparisons between the built in EVF on the Mk 2 and Amra or C700 vf is a a a completely erroneous comparison. What does the Canon EVF for the 700 Cost, or the one for the Varicam wich is also spectacular? Those EVFs are in entirely different leagues.
I have used the Mk2 EVF extensively and find it easy and accurate enough for me to trust in the heat of battle.
