C100: How do you like the C100?

I want to see the camera panning/tilting/whipping around, I'd like to see some buildings and people..and how it handles colors and the detail you can see in the sky and grass...how it grades when crushing space, etc...I like the low light tests and charts and stuff, but I need more!!

im all for being helpful, but seriously, what you're looking for is all over here and vimeo, forums aren't an excuse to not have to do the research yourself.

I am a research master. Just thinking/speaking out loud in this thread. I have watched every single page Vimeo and YouTube has to offer with various Canon C100 combination tags. I am not picking on this camera because I love my 5DmkII, but it just does not impress me. That's just my opinion. I know I am not the only one because I have seen similar comments on Vimeo. I don't think it's a bad camera, just not the image I'm looking for. User "Tcap" may be right because I also do watch a lot of C300/500 footage, so I shouldn't be comparing the 100 to them. Gary - I watched that clip before and do like what I see there. But I dislike more than I like out of all these videos.

... I don't think it's a bad camera, just not the image I'm looking for.....
Awesome. There are plenty of other cameras that are yet to come that may fill that need for you. For now the C100 fills my need just fine. The image quality is the best I have seen period in the sub $10k market that is out right now and I'm enjoying editing the footage. Best of luck finding that camera that you are looking for.

I really want to like this camera, but why is it that I cannot find any impressive footage online?? I tested it out in B&H and it looked nice, but every time I see a sample online, it looks about 1% better than a 5DmkII/III...am I crazy? Someone mentioned that an external recorder is recommended for anything of quality and I'm starting to believe it..

I'm sure you've touched a nerve with this comment, but I own a 5Dii and C100 and I agree with you, in part. The funny thing for me is that I had almost given up on my 5Dii until I bought the C100, and then started exploring ways to make the 5Dii work as a B camera. So yes, with a Mosiac Engineering filter, Magic Lantern and the proper Picture Style (I use Pancake Shutterdown), I agree that, IF one is careful, the C100 image is not HUGELY better than the 5Dii.

That's a HUGE if, however. Firstly, no matter how you slice it the C100 is less noisy, particularly in low light, and more detailed (higher resolution) in all situations. But even if you discount these advantages, the camera is designed to shoot video, not stills. The ergonomics are decent. The internal (handle) mic is good. The audio processing is very good. There's a decent waveform display and good focus tools. The LCD is sharp and accurate. It's hand-holdable without a cumbersome rig. One can even use the viewfinder when shooting, although I'm the first to admit that this is the weakest part of the camera. And C-log or Wide DR do give you more latitude than anything you can put on a 5Dii, so you have a wider margin for error, and a better ability to get a good shot in challenging lighting situations. And, of course, there's no annoying file size limit.

So for me it clearly has many advantages that go beyond far beyond IQ for web-broadcast clips, and these jusitfy the increased expense. But that is a judgement call - if one is willing to work around the DSLR's shortcomings, it may not seem worth the extra cost. However, I wouldn't complain if they added 60p, and someone comes out with an aftermarket EVF that can replace the stock version. And if Canon could start making lenses with silent IS, then all my prayers would be answered.

I find C100 image way ahead of my 5D2. 5D2 simply doesn't have the kind of details and sharpness that C100 has. With C log, it really blow 5D2 away. I am considering c100 and 5D3 that time but the 5D3 is kinda disappointing with the lacking of details and non articulating lcd which is a big minus point for me. I'm sick of bending or crawling when using slider on the ground. Although c100 costs twice 5D3, I find the returned value more than twice for the work which I do.

There could be a lot of factors that affect online video, so I hope you are downloading the original files for comparison if they are supplied on vimeo and not viewing the streaming version (I'm assuming so!) but I'll second the point that people are only just getting to grips with it and a lot of "real life" footage will still be in production/post. For a lot of uses (especially online) it probably won't be significantly better than a 5DIII, maybe not enough to justify the extra cost to a lot of people. But those who want to work with it and get to grips with it and buy a few add-ons could to get C300 IQ out of it, which I don't think you could hope to achieve with most DSLRs (except 1DC!).

Hi guys,
my opinion with the ninja is you don't need it. this comes from using the hell out of the camera since I bought it back in august.
So this is from experience. Sure, in grading the avchd will break first before the pro res but if you get the wb and exposure close enough
to start with you really don't need it. I'm actually quite surprised by the all the ninja comments... this video for example doesnt confirm buying
a ninja either "https://vimeo.com/54325017#at=0". If you can look at that and say "wow definitely get the ninja" then that would really concern me.
Also, if you bump the hdmi ur stuffed. and i even used the perfect path lockable hdmi cable. also in low light that annoying pull down thing takes
ages to synch up. I WILL NOT BE GETTING PRO RES UNLESS ITS ON BOARD OR NOT HDMI. if more tv stuff comes up im getting the c300.

I also know from a colleague that the ninja held up better in a very dark iso 20 000 shot. but how many times are you going to use that?
I really dislike forums for this reason and have avoided contributing really (ever since bloom recommended an ntg2 with zoom)
I believe you should hire / buy and go out and test stuff for yourself. anyway rant ended.. happy to be part of this. as long as its practical and sensible.

lastly, i also think if you don't over use 60i and just use it well lit and sparingly it comes out fine too.
I was going to make a post about that but cant see thread prefixes in my start new thread page. maybe its disabled. So ill paste what i found
and my vimeo below.
thanks

c100 60i test with glidecam 2000 and tokina 11-16mm
As you can see the 60i footage held up really well compared to the normal 24p.
The 60i footage, which was as easy as selecting frame rate -> 60i in the menu was then taken
in to adobe premiere cc and sped down to 40% to get the 1 to 1 frame relation. Also frame blend was
turned on. That seemed to get rid of some of the strobing. But to completely get rid of it I would suggest
a slower shutter speed. That would also support the argument to put the degrees up from 180 to 240
and the equivalent of say down from 1/48 of a second down to 1/30
You literally get half the light though, so you have to compensate. Try a larger aperture
or do the shutter trick as mentioned above.

It's capable of everything the C300 is capable of, at least as regards image (essentially), but most people who can afford to shoot with the C300 are better shooters. Or those shooting with the C100 will hide that fact rather than post online that they have a hobby/b camera. There's no rental market for it; why advertise that you use it!

It's fine... on par with the Epic MX/F3/Scarlet MX/FS100/etc. and a bit behind the F5. I like it a LOT, but I'm not sure it's the best investment if you plan to rent your camera out. No market. But for an owner-op it's great and the image quality is phenomenal.

Well, an Alexa also looks only about 1% better, to most average joe's and maybe to a lot us, when we're not pixel-peeping. All the same, I found some clips that impressed me at least:

Love the C100. We mostly shoot with the Ninja. However, beware! Yesterday shot in a Helicopter and the vibration seems to have really upset the drive in the Ninja. Lost a lot of the footage there. However, internal card worked well, and so we'll end up using that. Phew!

Here's another reason I like the C100. The hidden feature many don't know about. Slomo.

Ok it's a workaround but it's very usable! 50i placed on a 1920x1080 25p timeline in FCPx and slowed to 50%. Simples.

Works for me.C100 with C Log recorded in AVCHD. Worked fine in post. I did push it around a lot.

Love those Erik.....so polished....Top notch.

How do get such smooth walking shots...rig?
Also how do you light the reporters..onboard light?

Final question...why are you selling your G2...I bought 4 recently....are people dumping them because only 4 channels to work with now?

I used a the Canon 24-105. The IS is very good on that lens.

Cool lights LED panel model CL-LED600 600 LED with gold mount battery for fill. Similar. Worked pretty well and I also use a large Mathews expendable reflector at times.

I have had the GH2 and then the GH3. Great cameras for video but I decided to sell the GH3 because I wanted a 70D and then save up for the GH4. I think the GH4 is going to be something very special.
