How do you down convert HD to SD?

Thanks ! :)

well, im a premiere user, but what i would do is output your HD footage to a DV 720x480 mov file at 23.976 (if it was shot on 24F)

Anyone have any pointers for me here? I tried a ton of methods but I don't know if anything that I've done was right or not, lol. Also, most of my exports have looked squeezed.

well there is two ways of downconverting, but deppends on cam you are using.
but do like this and it will be ok
cature, edit, export in whatever format you need, probaly SD Ntsc, depends if it os going on a tv or dvd, but you probably know how is that work

you know what guys, you're not making any sense to me.

Anyone have any time to detail me through down converting to SD?

You can set the camera, via a menu setting, to output SD on firewire. This means you can capture as straight SD DV format and not worry about processing or downconverting HDV at all.

The alternative is to capture and edit HDV and then export to an SD format after editing. This will give you slightly better results.

For delivery on DVD, you would export to MPEG2 720x480 with widescreen aspect ratio. If this looks squeezed on a 4:3 TV, you need to set the DVD player to output as letterboxed video.

When you downconvert in camera, does it give the option of downconverting 4:3 or 16:9? Or just 16:9?

Hi Jeff. For the analogue SD video output, you can set the playback to be letterboxed (or not). Not sure what happens to the downconverted firewire video output when you do that, but I would hope that it is not affected, so that you have more flexibility in editing.

Coffee, just do it in FCP. Cut up your clip to desired edit, then do a conversion output in compressor. Under I think Advanced conversion - Just select the desired output and done (well wait for the batch to finish).

Thanks guys!

hey ncje,
I'm not sure which option to select. Below is a screenshot of all of the options that I can see, which one should I select?

Don't mean to hi-jack the thread, but I am trying to figure this out as well. I have used FCE to edit DV projects before, then export the project, drop it in iDVD and burn a DVD for family and friends.

I am close to getting an A1, so I wanted to try out the HDV workflow, with the eventual goal of having as high quality SD DVD as possible.

I dumped a couple minutes of someone else's 1080i60 HDV footage to my Apple PB G4 1.67, edited a 20-second movie in FCE, exported it and dumped it into iDVD.

Here's my problem:

When I export with "Using QuickTime Compression," the movie looks great, but I can't seem to find the right export settings to make it fit snugly as 16:9 in iDVD. It has side bars and looks scrunched.

When I export with "QuickTime Movie," the file fits snugly as 16:9 in iDVD but the picture itself looks off (i.e. horizontal jig-jagging lines when there is movement.) I posted on the Apple boards, and the most I got was that this jagging was normal because of the interlacing, and it would look fine on the TV.

Anyway, I know FCE and iDVD are a little below the proApps y'all use, but maybe someone can suggest the proper export protocol? Thanks!

Try DV50 NTSC Anamorphic. Burn a 16x9 SD 24P DVD from the exported QT file in DVD Studio Pro (or even iDVD) and it should work fine.

Sorry past your original question, but compressor 2.3 is not doing 720p25. Elton's suggestion seems right, if its just for reference and you want to share it with someone you could use the DV NTSC anamorphic too, but the DV50 is obvious better.
