House 5D Finale first 2 minutes posted online

Thought the episode looked totally fine. And kudos to all the people up the food chain who got on board with the DP's choice. Would love to see more shows take chances on tools, esp when the tools are chosen for the voice they can give.

Also hope this kind of thing pushes Canon to deal with the camera's issues. I so desperately want to be able to dress my actors in corduroy again without Barry's trippy trumpets making an appearance :)

Ummm... Corduroy is not a professional fabric. Real cinematographers wear linen, I'm pretty sure it's in the ASC guidelines. Google it!

Speaking of professional tools... sometimes I get paid to be an a--hole, does that count? :)

Depends on what "tools" you're using I suppose...

And hell no we're not tired of arguing about it- it's an interesting topic, one that becomes very important when it comes time to sell your product.

And Corduroy pants are just weird. Just saying.

Watched the episode tonight. Thought it looked great. Wandered over here from GH1 land (The heresy!) to see what was being said. I agree with most of what was said in the first couple of messages, mainly that the super-shallow DoF that they wanted was a perfect match for the 5D, it was maybe just a touch overdone (AS far as we are concerned, I'm sure the other 79 million viewers didn't mind it), and the story was so good that I gave up looking for technical flaws 2 minutes in.

Again, to make sure this doesn't get lost -- the super-shallow DOF was specifically the look the cinematographer was going for. Listen to the interview, he spells out a couple of reasons why he wanted that hyper-shallow look. Which, again, made the 5D the right choice for this project.

I wondering if it would boost 5D II camera sales if canon would use some episode parts to advertise 5D II in TV ,they wont do that but it would be cool if they did because it have huge impact.5D II is good enough for TV broadcast.

Personally I don't think the people from the show would allow it. I think I either read or heard the director say something about not wanting to do any type of favortism for a particular brand where it would make another manufacturer upset (just paraphrasing here). It was basically the right tool for this particular job. When he was asked if he'll ever use it again he said "if the job calls for it" (paraphrasing again).

Yeah, Fox is partnered with Panasonic to promote Panasonics AV line. They were saying there were some sticky discussions between Panasonic and Fox about this. I think they thought they would be able to just quietly use the 5DII without much notice. Who knows, when the AF100 is released, Panny may go to House and say you owe us one ...or ten episodes on the AF100. I'm sure it will be good enough to handle it too.

I think that's one reason you get reticent answers regarding future use of the 5DII on the show. They just don't want to cause waves in the company.

Well they dont have to do it ,internet will spread info anyway and more people will know about this.Especially sceptical photographers should be surprised, for them video is just a gimmick, like video in cellphone, they dont even realize that its different sensor size and footage looks like movie.

Looked top notch. It's softer, more pastel in colour, and shakier than usual House episodes, but it's great. Really amazing that they did it with a 5D.

The only time I broke out of it and thought "Bah! Canon" was at 8 mins when the usual vertical noisey smear shadowed banding occurs. (not just a video problem, but in stills as well with Canon cameras. Something about the way it processes the grain and image)

Lots of things made it the right tool - to wit, super shallow DOF doesn't mean a whole lot if the footage looks like sh##, or can't be edited - or in the case of this series, doesn't match the overall quality of previous episodes (which in this case were all shot with 35mm film). Simply put, 99% of the people who saw the show knew anything was different at all - and some of these people are hard core HOUSE fans.

Totally amazing what can be done with a camera Best Buy sells. With cards you can get at Walmart.

I just saw it in HD. Great episode. I understand why they used 5D (cramped surroundings etc.)

I looked for moire or banding but couldn't find any. They worked around it with shot planning. One thing I did notice (besides razor thin DOF and 5D "shakiness" we are used to): skin tones were really really great! If it's 5D sensor or careful grading, I don't know. But skin tones in "under the rubble" shots were really great.

I also noticed they planned shots to 5D strengths. Maybe 5D isn't be-all-end-all HD device but in this particular episode it really shined.

Yep, that's what I thought. I think they perfectly matched the tool to the needs of the production and the desired look, and came up with an excellent episode. They took advantage of the product's strengths and they avoided any situation where any weakness would have presented itself.

I'd only watched it on a download on 720p but caught on it TV (Pal SD) and thought it looked fantastic. I bet 99% of people wouldn't think anything of it. In that sense, perfect tool for the job and a fine job it did.
