House 5D Finale first 2 minutes posted online

Interesting. I'm of mixed feelings on that because on the one hand, one of the major purposes to the DVXFest is to promote collaboration.

On the other hand, I bet we'd be pretty amazed with what some of our members would be able to accomplish, single-handed (and yes, if you're gonna be a one-man-band, I say you have to run sound too. Truly a crew of ONE.)

SoloFest? Story concept/script/producing/shooting/all crewing/post/sound design/music... all one guy. The only other people allowed at all would be actors... would people be up for that?

One million percent. It'll be fun. The best anything can be, it'll be fun.

Well, Barry_G. As noble as it is to try and "help" others, I have to agree with Revsta: We're all telling people how bad this is, that is, what you can't do or can't be done.

Why bother? They're not asking for help, or anything that resembles it. They already know that milions are wasted on paying people day rates so that they can sustain a life and more movies can be made. Thus creating the opportunity for the one GOOD movie a year to be made. No, Let them go out and build award winning sand castles three feet from the tide. It doesn't really matter that we said "Well, in ten minutes your castle is gonna be washed away"... it's all about learning on your own.

So, this is Revsta's first Sand Castle and he's revved up to build it three feet from the rising tide... hell, let him. Next time he'll build it where a Tsunami has to destroy all of his, and his casts and (scant) crew's hard work.

The truth is that filmmakers don't want to hear the truth: it's much better to frolic in a lottery-ticket-based fantasy than ever attempt to walk what's already a well defined path into reality.

I'm gonna let them do it! For fear of being runover in the street by some DSLR Rebel Without a Crew that recognizes me.

You and Barry are rather polarizing...for better or for worse...

IMHO here is the bar for DSLR work from forum members/alum http://www.mattworkman.com/v5/blog-2010-02.html Matt has had so many high profile gigs with his 7d from music vids to commercial work that his blog is almost like a case study. Lately his music vids get playes so much i think MTV stands for matt tv. Nice to see I was gone and the convo is still lively regarding these cameras.

You know...I've noticed something about Matt that no one has brought up. But out of all these conversations and quarrels about DSLR this and DSLR that....you don't find him commenting at all. All we see is him popping in at times saying..."here's my latest." And when you look at his clientel...well...that speaks for itself.

Now that's a great example of someone who is looking past all the garbage and actually doing something. Good for him.

Yeah i've been following his blog and progress for awhile. I remember the first vid he posted here and to see where he's come to now is amazing. I've decided i'm not gonna bicker about this stuff anymore either. The work done on these cameras is out there, the work on the red is out there, the work on the Alexa will be out there as well. No one cares which camera stuff was shot on but us film nerds anyway.

A year later and now House season 7 inter-cuts with 5D footage all the time.

Alas, everytime it happens I immediately get drawn out of the TV show and think "DSLR!".

Wasn't so bad in the season final because most of the ep was shot in it. Now it sticks out a mile now because of the intercutting - soft detail and pastelly/mushy skin, JUMP to sharp 35mm detail and grain, back to soft detail and mushy skin, Damn you DVX user and eagle trained eyes!

Ahh I'm not the only one who noticed it. In the last episode it was very noticable when they would cut to the Canon shots, looked like they couldn't get the CC to match either...

This is a much healthier approach. Work to master the tools you have and never discount an option out-of-hand.

Cutting between 35mm and 5d is like cutting between 35mm and 16mm - sure there's a difference, but they're all great filmmaking tools and can all look stunning in their own right.

Ha, none of this is going away, thankfully.

Again, I have not seen any films shot with just one person directing and pulling focus at the same time that are any good that can be used as an example. And I mean dramatic film with actors and dialogue. I have seen plenty of "tests" of people in apartments but that doesn't signify a big shift in how people are going to work.

This is a collaborative medium, and there are limits to what one person can do, especially when shooting with larger sensors.

How about Monsters?

When we shoot The Great Dying webseries we have a pretty small crew on location too. It's me doing all that has to do with the camera. That means operating, DPing, pulling focus, setting up the lights and what not. I also co direct together with my spouse. Then we have two guys doing whatever is needed. Can be everything from collecting the food we've ordered to helping me carry some lights. They are not filmmakers or experienced film crew, just good guys we pull in to help us with misc stuff. Then we have a sound guy and on "zombiedays" a dedicated make-up artist. My spouse is a make-up artist too and if there isn't that much to do in that department she will do it herself.
Except for the talent in front of the camera that is...
This means that I can't do every camera move I'd like and I can't set up exactly the light I want and that I often have to cut corners. So there are absolutely some positions we'd love to fill if we had the resources. No matter how much money we would ever have I would definitely keep the crew as small as I could though.
