Hoping for new firmware keep up with GH-1

As a guy who made some money with a DVX - and is not quite ready to sell it - the main things I missed with that camera were footage that could key reasonably well; footage that could hold up to heavier grading; and at least 1 level of sharp, useful slow motion.

I feel like even the 550D/2Ti delivers wonderfully on those aspects, and I also get a tremendous boost in resolution.

The things I miss? Primarily purpose-built audio, where even the DVX excels. I could get that with the 5D/Magic Lantern combo and a bunch of breakout gear. I miss the built-in ND, and the fairly useful autofocus. I missed the viewfinder but add-ons are getting pretty good.

Funny, what I really miss these days is a top handle - Not so much for shooting, but for convenience during setup & breakdown. Gonna have to kludge something together with rail system parts.

Screw enough stuff onto a DSLR and you can get the utility of the purpose-made video form factor. Assembling and disassembling that stuff was a nightmare, I finally got a flight case, foam, leather and hot glue and made a "throw it all in assembled" case - I really can recommend that approach. $50 total and an afternoon's work:

I am surprised you would say this Barry?
So you're saying that all the filmmakers who shot and released films on all those prior cameras, were wrong to do so, and they should have waited for a DSLR to be invented?

The 5d isn't a pinhole camera. It was used for an entire episode of a popular show on network tv,
and everyone I watched it with could not tell any difference from what they usually see.. :)

Also, if you noticed in his interview, Gale Tattersol mentioned that there were "issues" with the footage from the 5D on that show which required a fair amount of post work. And that the post work took longer than normal for that reason.

Funny thing about technological progress: when a piece of equipment comes out that is more capable than what you already own... your existing gear loses none of its existing features.

People speak about tech evolution as if their gear has suddenly lost capability. It hasn't.

Maybe not, but as a free-lance DP, it definately looses its marketability. I can still shoot great looking footage with my HVX200 w/Brevis & Primes. But, producers and agencies won't hire me with that rig as its yesterday (or the day before yesterday's) thing.

Yeah somehow everyone neglects the fact that there was a tremendous amount of post work done.

Sigh.

The GH13 is the flavour of the month. An $800 body with a clean codec that you can mount almost any lens to and looks pro, what's not to like. Kholi's comparison with the 5D in another thread looks pretty spot on except maybe for latitude (see Hunters GH13 thread http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=214113).

I've just shot a bunch of shorts with the 5D 24/25p firmware and they look great. We're really spoilt with DSLRs, you can get big money shots with no money. Stuff like rigging the camera to a C-Stand and doing a pseudo jib shot over a bed, or running around with diy steadicams, it's just too easy.

I'm not running out and buying a GH13 just yet because I know the 5D so well and what it can and can't do. I'd rather be making films than evaluating a new camera and the chances are next month there will be something better available. I think I'll wait for the 2nd gen bodies to come out, I don't think we'll be waiting very long.

Yeah, I think so as well. Not so much flavor of the month, but there's more around the corner so we'll have to see what happens.

Truth be told, whatever it is will have to be something incredibly special: pretty much a sensor devoted to the video aspect if possible.

Let's see, though. I think a lot of people will be happy switching over to the GH13 for now, already know too many putting up their 7Ds for sale and some 5Ds to get the PL priveledge.

Shoot it up... with whatever you have.
