Hoping for new firmware keep up with GH-1

Hey, briefly went to the GH-1 forums and they are just absolutely going crazy over there. Tester13 has really helped them out in every possible way with the new firmware update. So just wanted to make a post and ask every one what they would want to see in a new 5D firmware update.

Maybe you could make a list. Heres 2 of mine i can think off the top of my head:

1. Higher bit rate
2. Live HDMI out for 1080p
3. No more line skipping

1. Not needed on the 5D. The codec is not the limiting factor on the camera, and a higher bitrate would only decrease your recording time.

2. Likely not fixable in firmware. Similar issues were not resolvable with GH1...it still has no live monitor out at all!

3. Very likely not fixable with firmware...is a pretty fundamental thing.

2. actually Trammell Hudson was working on something to that nature but never got to the next release of his next firmware which contained many interesting things we haven't seen yet... http://www.vimeo.com/6618825

but ya I think the 5D markII more or less is maxed out other then a few frills. Bring on the next camera!

If it's maxed out then what possible updates would be on a 5D mark III, if there even is a 5D Mark III?

New hardware could bring many new things. The existing hardware might be maxxed out on the 5DM2, but the 5DM3 is new hardware, so who knows what new features or capabilities or performance it might bring?

If you cannot make a film with the 5d, then I don't know what to tell you. People can keep telling themselves they need hardware updates to make it work, etc, but it's all BS.

well for me, I do more directing instead of cinematography, I know most of you guys are probably cinematographers so you can give me anything and I'll be happy to make a film. Give me a 16mm aton and i'm good, hell a super 8mm camera is all I need. Tell my DP that and he'll laugh at me. haha

for one thing , they can get rid of those silly crop black bars to get the 16:9 - give us a full video from sensor please.

my request is that i want it to magicall turn itself into film camera and i want infinite amount of film rolls ok ? thanks.

you can make a film with a pinhole camera ... doesn't mean that it will be a good looking film. It might have a great story and look like crap but still be good enough as a narrative for some. On the other hand if you shoot nature or very high res footage you are destined to get the next best looking footage you can find. We see what is possible in a stills sequence from these cameras so it sets a bar we look to achieve. That is why some are in search of the next camera, the next hardware. Try shooting an infinite focus shot while panning, of a bunch of trees or rocks on a mountain side with the 5D and tell me it doesn't need better hardware...

The 5d isn't a pinhole camera. It was used for an entire episode of a popular show on network tv,
and everyone I watched it with could not tell any difference from what they usually see.

The people who cannot do good work with a 5d aren't going to suddenly become a filmmaker with the next camera.

If there are issues with a camera, then you work around them to the best of your ability, (and the absolute majority of people don't even notice these things anyway.)

I am going to go out and shoot. :)

Exactly true. And it is also true of the HPX170, the HVX200, the EX1, the DVX100, the JVC HD100, the Arri 16s, the Canon 1014XL-S, the XL2, and many many many other cameras.

We've long, long, long since surpassed the point where the camera was the restricting element.

I don't know I feel at this point the market for dslr's is moving so fast that it really just distracts me I feel. Cause right now you can get a sweet dslr and the next day it will be surpassed by something new, then the next few weeks something new will surpass that, then few weeks later something new will surpass that etc....ugh.... and then everyone will get frustrated that they don't have the newest and coolest....I don't know if any of you feel that way lol

I just want to make movies THATS ALL!!! =)

Then ignore the equipment entirely. Rodriguez shot El Mariachi on an ancient (probably) 1950's-era Arri 16S. James Longley got two Oscar nominations for films he shot on a standard-def DVX100. "My Date With Drew" got a theatrical release, and it was shot on a cheap little 8mm camcorder they bought from Circuit City, and it had to be shot within 30 days because they couldn't afford to actually buy the camera so they returned it to CC on the 30-day mark. Paranormal Activity was shot with some cheap consumer camera. "Open Water" was shot on a Sony VX2000 60i-only DV camcorder and got nationwide theatrical release. Blair Witch shot on a $399 consumer 8mm camcorder, with a little bit of 1970's-era 16mm film from a CP16.

Every one of those films was shown theatrically, and not one of those filmmakers got bogged down in "which DSLR is better".

Ignore the tech stuff about the cameras. Just buy one (any one, it doesn't really matter that much) and go make your movie.

Funny thing about technological progress: when a piece of equipment comes out that is more capable than what you already own... your existing gear loses none of its existing features.

People speak about tech evolution as if their gear has suddenly lost capability. It hasn't.

Excellent post!

I didn't say "something comes out and then it makes it obsolete" or "non-usable".....I said "Surpasses it"

I didn't really see where in the post you specificly got that, I love my 5D and it works absolutely beautifully! but okay :dankk2::dankk2:

Fortunately including the 5D, I have been thru an XL2, HVX200 and EX1 not to mention others and I could not admit that the camera isn't restricting, yet as of today. It depends on what you shoot and who for and what is the final format to be sold and shown. For the internet you could possibly say this but nowhere else is it absolute currently.

I am surprised you would say this Barry?
