Honestly...

Is the GH1 adequate for SD-DVD and web distribution. I mean c'mon... I really don't care about 5,7,9,or 11d's, or Ti, or whatever... I've got students who want to use it and have made award winning projects but will probably never see theatrical distribution. Heck, I doubt if I will ever see it or anyone else I know.

Forget the broken codecs...
Forget Fanboyism...
Not asking about Canon...
Not asking about Final Cut...

If the rules are followed, and care is taken, can great DVD's (not BluRay) and Web stuff come from this camera? Definitive answer (I'll need this to convince administration).

Absolutely! The Gh1 is a truly magnificent little camera! Somehow it got shoved into the more amateur category while the Canons romp...but it's not true...

I hope so! Lol.
I'm going to see it blasted through a 2K projector in on to a 40' screen in a couple of weeks.

something I did for the web:

for something for theatrical / HDtv / Blu Ray / DVD see link in sig.

Web vs. TV vs. Big Screen - is not really the question with the 7D vs GH1. The resolution is comparable.
For my money, when the GH1 image holds up it's maybe 5% better than the 7D. When it falls apart though, it's unusable. For web or big screen or anything.

Yeah, we got a film into SxSW on the GH1. I burned it to an AVCHD video file and played it on my 67" DLP projection TV, it looked really pretty good. Yes there are issues that I saw, but I bet you 95% of the audience wouldn't.

For more examples of the GH1 on the web, be sure to look at our last two DVXFest winners, "Dispatch" and "Nightlight" -- both were shot on the GH1 and are pretty good examples of the kind of cinematic quality you can get from it.

For the price, I chose the GH-1 over the Canon 7D. For teaching, given the price, I think it is a "no brainer" for a teaching environment. For the price of 1 7D+lens (ok just about the price...), one can get 2 GH-1 kits...

For teaching one can discuss, 'f-stop', 'DoF', focus, lens selection for a given effect, etc. which are not really available to a similar priced ($1300) Video camera. And it produces an image that one would not be embarrassed about, or have to explain, 'well this is a student project', etc.

Your students will like the GH1's flip out LCD and nice viewfinder. It behaves more like a video camera.

Is this for High School?

When I was in High School (just a few short years ago) we were shooting on MiniDV and Digital 8 handycams...there is a total limit to what you can teach with those. I learned more in 4 days playing with a DVX then I had learned in 4 years with those handycams, and I think the GH1 will give your students a similar experience.

I'm in high school... I LOVE THIS CAMERA! Of course it cost me most of my life savings but it was totally worth it.

No question at all, absolutely 1000% yes.

I've seen the above mentioned short from Jack & Barry (many many times :))
played out on Jack's 40something inch HD 1080P monitor and it looks incredible.

Pipe VS Machette is DONE?! Man I HAVE been AWOL a long time. I remember watching rough cuts of this back in the day (ok well like 7 months ago.) Wowza! Looks AMAZING!

All the DSLRs are flawed...don't let the Canon hype fool you...it's just hype. Heck, there have been full feature length films (indie of course) made with the D90. I have personally thought the GH1 has put out good enough footage to look like RED ONE footage at times...I know the resolution ins't there but the colors and latitude are great. I'm getting a GH1...after going through the 5dmkii, 7D, D300s, d5000. :)

Hey everyone...

Thanks for the input. Based upon that I went and bought one from a guy who was selling it for a steal here in Houston (like 700 for the body plus an adapter- I've got a lot of FD glass that I use with the Letus Extreme). I brought it to the school this morning and the staff was completely unmoved. I showed them the comments here and they were completely unmoved. Since I teach at a middle school where I let the kids use my HMC-150, I showed them the price difference between the cameras and how we were even surpassing the High School. They then began to complain about the students breaking the cameras.

Education...

Hopefully, I can convince the school to buy 2 based on the awards we have won and not give me a budget for next year... but I love mine! It's so different.
We have state testing and benchmarking this week, but I am going to shoot like a porn star with this thing this weekend!

If you are interested, you can go to HPdigitalassist.com and check out Galena Park Middle School and the other winners- the average age of the students participating is 13!

Too bad people in general are only impressed with big toys. I get that a lot too but then I get some real wows after I show them footage from any DSLR...and return business too :)

Here's the trailer for a short film I shot on the GH1. It's an example of what can be done using movie lighing.

I can't seem to get the Vimeo tags to work.

Hit the vimeo tag button and then just insert the numbers, not the whole url.

I edited it in the quote.
