Home Made "Sky Captain"

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

hey guys. been away for a few weeks in india. Im back now. I will try and put together a breakdown of the shot.

enterdcable,

It sounds like you pretty much have your shot planned out. I am not sure what you are asking for tip wise. Just get the lighting to match the real thing and make sure your green screen is clear and shadow free.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

man oh man...
i give up!
that was incredible. keep up the good work until i find you... and kill you! :P

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Arcburn,

Wish me luck. I hope my shot comes out as nice as yours did.

How long did it take you to model the background? Did you use Mya?

Cheers!

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

enterdcable. Get someone to climb your tower with a digital still camera and take as many pictures as possible of the panorama. They can be stiched together in post to make better backdrop than you could possibly achieve by modeling the entire vista in 3D.

If the shot is to have shallow DOF then you can just ge away with the still. If the back ground is in focus you can give it some life with some small moving objects that can be added to trick the eye into believing its all live. Like comped in birds, or smoke/steam/cloud movement. We do a lot of this kind of thing on Andromeda.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Very nice. Good to see another 3dsmax user. I'm currently experimenting with entire CG sets after seeing Casshern and Sky Captain. If you guys liked the look of sky captain check out Casshern. here's a link to the trailer. http://www.apple.com/jp/quicktime/trailers/casshern_large.html

As for the footage, did you texture the entire ship or does the diffusion hide the detail? Looks excellent. I'll be sure to throw up some of my tests soon. As for dillonculp, you can extend the greenscreen using what the call a "garbage matte" which is basically masking out anything that is not in front of the screen. So all you need is your actors in front of the screen and the rest is garbage. I've been using green posterboard from walmart taped to my wall for my screen :) Anyway, keep up the great work!

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Arcburn you're my hero! Have any other cool green screen stuff ? Where are you? I might need to employ you for a very small project... ;D!

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Hi Entercable.

I am in the L.A. area. PM me and let me know what you have in mind. I am pretty busy on shoots till the beg of Jan but after that I may be able to help.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Thanks guys.

I am planning on doing a short in the new year. Not so much in the sky captain (i.e. 30's film) style. But a whole short done in green screen. I will keep you guys posted as it progresses.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Thanks Sonnyboo. Big fan of your horrors of war movie. can't wait for it.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

Arcburn> Let me resurrect this great thread if you don't mind - would you be pls. so kind and go step by step through the most important stages of your production as you promised earlier ;D THANKS

I especially like your overlays where in the foreground of your skycaptain is that control panel or bridge if you like..

I'm wondering about a bit less laborous approach - would it be feasible to use for instance that Serious Magic's ULTRA chroma key and virtual set package (vector based keying) to speed up the whole production with color and blur effects applied afterwards. I know the results wouldn't be as good as 'frame by frame' postproduction but this package allows for some static or movie overlays as well so it should be wide open to test the imaginary of retro futuristic leaning authors to their fullest desire.. :o

btw any news or media clips from ACE Derringer?

Awesome video!
It's amazing when we see what you're working with...

The DVX + Creativity are some powerful tools.

Re: Home Made "Sky Captain"

frickin' rad. Arcburn, please make something bigger with this effect but don't waste your time on a sky captain spoof or even a sky captain-like story. your talents could be put to better use on an original story.
