Holy crap I am eating my words

We are talking about comparing DoF from sensor to sensor, so thought you would realize I meant that given the same focal length.

Below is a rough representation of a tight CU, cropped to 2/3" sensor area, using a 28mm at f/6.3. The ball is about 3', the plant at about 10' and the back wall is about 20'.

in most situations the range of dof that is missing (the ultra shallow stuff) you never use anyway when shooting actors.

That is why I posted the shot of the phone.

I think we are in agreement J.

yeh, probably just misunderstanding what u getting at. I find that I am never shooting at a subject closer than 6'. I want cu I'm at 50 or 85, I want wide I'm at 18, but then again
ninety nine percent of the time the only thing I'm shooting is actors so barrell distortion is something I'm acutely aware of.

I'd say that on ~S35 you can get "perfect" CUs on a good 35mm lens. I like 50mm 85mm and 100mm a lot though, but you also need to keep perspective/compression continuity and aesthetics in mind. The ball is a bit extreme, trying to see how much thinner I can get it. Doubt the f0.3 will help much but it does go to show that you'll get some separation with your BG within a normal room's dimensions. Try to shoot in big rooms and you can maximize it a bit. Shoot outside and you can easily get buttery bokeh in your backgrounds.

Spend a bit more for the S35 sensor and you can kiss this whole thing goodbye, and still shoot 2/3" if you'd like/need! :)

Well hopefully by the time I move up from 2/3 to RED s35 I won't be shooting, and my producer will have hired a dp. Well that's the plan anyway. ;)

Sounds good, but you should never want to detach yourself. DP's are only there to help you make it better. You still gotta tell the story, through the medium.
