last week, the friend of mine shoot some test stock futage for US costumers of him.. food and cooking stuff.. the half was shoot with 5d and other half with EX3.. needless to say, it was in well lited studio enviroment..

yesterday they called him. They said that 5d footage is unacceptable quality for them. he will rent EX3 for additional shooting.

Cieloent, place yourself in this man's shoes. The client has called and said they don't like the 5D footage. What do you do?

can you show us the footage ,i would ask why they didnt liked it .I didnt saw it so its hard to say really if its because of 5d resolution or its because he shot some bad stuff with it.

I don't have any of the footage because it wasn't my post.

But let me ask you this: if you don't need low-light capabilities or shallow DOF, what does an HDSLR give you?

Your request is very broad. And if I had any of my XDcam footage nearby I would gladly post you a sample, but I'm not going to go scour the internet to prove a point when I can do it without it.

Just answer me these questions:

Does the 7D have over/under cranking abilities?
Can it output an uncompressed 4:2:2 image?
Does it have a motorized zoom?
Can it record 13min continuously?

I can go on, but to answer for you, it's no to all of them. That's a fact.

Both DSLRs and the EX are good for what they do, but as far as a standalone video camera, the EX wins more often than not.

So basically you cannot provide footage to show me visually what can be achieved with an EX that cannot be done with an HDSLR. Also the Gh1 records with no limit, + the money I would be saving on an EX I can buy Two or more HDSLRs and record from multiple camera angles with each one offsetting each other with the 12 minute intervals.

I'll be back when someone can find some footage online or post some footage to show me why an EX is better. Now to the other poster if the client specifically wants a camera than you give them exactly what they want, but if you can convince them and show them why to use an HDSLR than you can still get the gig as well.

...record from multiple camera angles with each one offsetting each other with the 12 minute intervals.

That's not the point. My bad on the GH1, but besides it, can any of the other DSLRs shoot more than 12 min continuously? No.

Do you have a rebuttal for my other statements? The only thing you can claim is "show me the footage."

Stop being ignorant. It's this attitude that is ruining otherwise constructive discussion in these forums.

Now comes the name calling again...... The 100% truth is you cannot show any footage because it does not exist. Is the EX along with many other cameras more advanced, yes that is a fact BUT I can achieve a look as good or close with an HDSLR that is properly configured.

That is my argument. Now no point in rising my post count and going back and forth here. The truth is these cameras (Hdslr) are amazing .

Everyone have a great evening and enjoy life, I have a shoot I need to go too

or moireless , alias free brick walls, picket fences, striped shirts... :)

But seriously, I agree great cameras in some situations

No banding in low light (GH1)? :)

It should be noted that the two links in my sig are DSLR (GH1 Footage). And I'll probably shoot my feature on two or three 7D's.

But if you want to know what an EX1 or any HD prosumer cam north of a HV40 or (whatever number they're on now) can do that a DSLR those things would be on the list.

Nope, not name calling. Just pointing out your blatant ignorance on the subject as evidenced by everyone else in the thread calling you out on it.

And considering I own a 7D, I wish that your claims would be true. But it's just a fact that the DSLRs are not there yet.

But let me ask you this: if you don't need low-light capabilities or shallow DOF, what does an HDSLR give you?

All small sensor cams give me nothing - 0.
Camera like 550d for 800 bucks is a dream come true even with its faults.
ITs not like "oh another cam with movie size sensor" ,even year ago i wasnt expecting canon to come out with 24p camera and movie size sensor,do you know how much 24p cameras cost ,even those with small sensors ?
I know that 1080p has really 720p like resolution but it can look amazing in right hands.I dont know what your friend recorded but i dont think they didnt wanted 5d footage because of resolution,i would like to see how footage looked like then we can argue that 5d or other canons DSLRs arent good enough for 720p (downsized from their 1080p )because they are if you know what youre doing.

Judging your latest work I think it looks amazing, now let me ask you why is it that you are not working with a cam like an Sony Ex? Also I never said the HDSLR did not have problems or limitations, all I said was show me.

Now if fast pans cannot be done without the screen tearing I'm more than sure I can find a video to show otherwise, but my question is why shoot on an HDslr instead of an EX knowing it's problems?

thanks

Sorry I thought you asked for footage showing things an EX1 could do that a DSLR couldn't.

AS for the fast pans or whipping around you have to be very careful on the GH1 or the whole codec will fall apart. You have to avoid telephoto and you may not be able to shoot 24p.

GH1, 7D, RED 1 will all show some skew if pushed to far and fast in panning. It's there in District 9, though I've had to have it pointed out to me, it's there in Southland.

The reason why I'd shoot a feature on DSLR, and this is assuming low budget and limited time is because of low light capability, controllable DOF, and the likely hood of using multiple cameras.

I hired for a low budget horror feature as Art Director that was going to shoot on 2 7D's over 11 days. I quit when they called me back and told me they were going to shoot Stereoscopic Red with the same budget still in 11 days. That's crack talk.

That's an extreme example but speaks to the reason I'd choose 7D for a low budget short number of days shoot.

With an EX1 or an HVX the camera is heavier, already takes more light before you put an adapter on it it goes from being OK in low light to bad in low light. You have to use the adapter to conrtol the DOF. You now have to use a lot more light to light your shoot. Even when time is not a factor DP's like the ability to work with less light. You can do more and do it quicker. So that's a big big reason. Shallow DOF and great low light capability with a DSLR vs. very limiting low light capability with SDOF or mediocre lowlihght capability.

Also the Dynamic range seems to be better with the 7D than hidef camers. Though some tests say otherwise. Even if the dynamic range / latitude is not as great it looks better than HD cameras when it blows out. If you shoot an HD camera in to tree branches with blown out sky behind it you will see jaggie ugliness. If you shoot a DSLR camera into the same thing you will get blow out but it will have a nice soft bloom around the branches.

So DSLR because:

  • fantastic low light capability with ability to control DOF, it cuts out the light sucking 35mm adapters
  • I can have two or more for multiple angles or to just leave set up on a tripod, crane, steadicam etc, so no change over time
  • IMHO more filmmic than HD cameras
Trade offs include:

  • 2nd system sound
  • no monitoring out (gh1)
  • careful about skew
  • careful about moire and other patterns
  • careful about mud (gh1)
  • no flip LCD (7d)
  • banding (gh1)
So you can see why I lean toward the 7D now.

As for 7D over HD it's about the speed that I can get the image I want due to the set up time for lights and the ability to have multiple angles. If I had lots of time I would choose RED or Film. IF I have very little time I will not shoot with Red or Film and I will begrudgingly shoot HD over DSLR. So for limited time or low light HDSLR is what I would choose.

Excellent post and now I see why the EX can be an advantage over an HDSLR but you need more people to handle it correctly. In a sense then an HDSLR can be a one man show. Your work is a true inspiration to many of us and I ask to please continue to teach us and show us the way.

Also if there is any way I can support your production please leave a link.

Thank You!

I think the HD cameras are more reliable and professional.

I think the HDSLRs make a more filmmic and aesthetically pleasing image with less hassle / add ons.

But they are like a beautiful blond with terrible flatulence. If you are willing to put up with the gas, she's the hottest and cheapest date around. But when she farts the illusion is destoyed. The HD cameras never fart. But they aren't as hot. Luckily in narrative work you can pre-plan around and do retakes to cover up the farts.

Just answer me these questions:

Does the 7D have over/under cranking abilities?

Yes. 720p60 and it is a still camera, the original timelapse machine. Any other undercranking is horribly cliche.

Can it output an uncompressed 4:2:2 image?

No. When did you last capture uncompressed from a camera?

Does it have a motorized zoom?

No. Who uses those? Seriously, even for event stuff...go manual.

Can it record 13min continuously

No. Its one flaw as an event camera, which it is not completely, for speeches at least. I suppose thats the "gotcha."

:violin: Hehehe.

With digital, especially if you have second system sound, which most do with DSLRS, plenty of folks roll longer than 13 minutes to maintain sync to not lose time to slate and not "lose the moment".

So once you get into the nitty gritty of a tough scene where the actors are finally in the zone, or once you're running out of time and that one technical element keeps going wrong, it's not that uncommon to keep rolling and just try to get another take without cutting.

But having said that, I don't see 13 minutes as a major limitation. Many movies have been made with 11 minute film mags.

It's not a big deal and it shouldn't be dismissed as stupid concern either depending on what kind of work you want to do - exploratory dramatic improv? You might want the ability to keep rolling while you make minor adjustments.
