if you look at what I was quoting you'll see why I wrote that. I'm simply saying that "it looks as good as film" doesn't mean DSLRs are necessarily the right tool for all applications.

..."it looks as good as film" ...

last week, the friend of mine shoot some test stock futage for US costumers of him.. food and cooking stuff.. the half was shoot with 5d and other half with EX3.. needless to say, it was in well lited studio enviroment..

yesterday they called him. They said that 5d footage is unecceptable quality for them. he will rent EX3 for additional shooting

if we put it in another way.. HV20 with HDMI capture in studio lited enviroment makes decent footage, but that doesen't make it brodcast camera..

..consistance..

I think that that's what you mean. I think that these words are more diplomatic to use, less likely to get DSLR fans up in arms, less likely to express sentiments along the lines of, "Don't tell me what I can or can't do!"

that is correct. bad choice of words on my part

I think I need to stop writing in this thread because everything I say gets taken out of context

In regards to your comment about it looking as good as film….the non-technical side of me (which is probably 98% of folks watching this stuff) agrees with you. But the technical side of me (which is probably about 2%) disagrees. So, it all depends on the when and where you state that kind of comment. I wouldn’t worry too much…you’ll get a lot of flack either or. But I know what you mean.

I'll probably catch some flack on my percentages...lol

I've slowly come to that realization as well. You have to write like a lawyer sometimes...

no kidding

Welcome to online bulletin boards :D

sadly I have been on message boards a lot it seems to be this thread in particular that is just out of control ;)

Haha see this is what I'm talking about. I was simply saying that "it looks like film" is not a be-all, end-all reason these are the best camera. I was not actually saying they look like film.

ps. Shot on HDSLR

So? It doesn't matter that some nice stuff has been shot on an HDSLR...if your client doesn't want to use it, then you have to use something else.

BS, companies and clients are finding ways to cut cost. If you can even get comparable image quality at a fraction of the price then the client will be extremely happy.

RED camera will cost $1300+ per day if not more, when compared to a HDSLR. If famous musicians have their videos filmed with these cameras I'm more than sure any client will accept it.

Particularly it doesn't really matter what you shoot with as long as your professional and your product matches a certain quality. I can dig up countless professional commercial work done with HDSLRs, so I really do not know what you are talking about.

Sure film cameras, and professional Video Cameras can hold more detail and create easier shoots, but when you balance cost factor and image these little cameras hold their self pretty well and can definitely hang with the big boys.

For the Price of an EX3 ($8000+), I can build a mini production studio with An HDSLR, Lenses, Rigs, Audio, Monitors, and still have money left over for a website and advertising.

I'm not saying it is better, all I'm saying is that the quality can hang with the big boys and for the money it's almost a no brainer.

Don't be an idiot. If you show a potential client EX1 footage and then 5D footage, and they want the EX1 look, then you give them the EX1 look.

PERIOD.

And if you have a client who doesn't want to use HDSLR footage, and that's all you can give then, then guess what? They'd not going to hire you.

Obviously you cannot form an educated conversion without resulting to name calling, so I will express some more of mine in this thread.

Professional work is more than just a camera, it's about story telling, angles, photography and so much more. I dare you to show me any footage shot with an Ex1,3,etc. that cannot be done with a 5d,7d, etc.

Also what you keep failing to not comprehend is the money that Tv stations, Record Labels, Film Projects, etc. are always trying to find ways to save money. These HDSLRs properly used IMO are simply unmatched by any video camera factoring everything else I already mentioned.

You actually have still many clients ( I worked with ) who still love the look of Dvx cameras. This goes from lawyers, doctors, hotels, media companies, weddings, etc.

Build clients, deliver professional work and I'm more than sure you can make an honest living. Let the anger go my friend and look at the bigger picture here

Okay, so if you have a client that requests you shoot on an DVX, and not on an HDSLR, are you still going to shoot on an HDSLR?

EDIT: There was an ad during SXSW for a client who was looking for a videographer, and the ad stated not to apply if you only had a 7D or the like. So you're still going to apply, maybe attach that video in the e-mail? How far do you think that's going to get you?

Um, there's actually a good amount of footage the DSLRs can't shoot that an EX can. For starters there's the overcranking/undercranking. Or what about uncompressed 4:2:2 out of the HD-SDI? Or event shots that require more than 12min clip times? How about audio? And in my experience at least the rolling shutter issues on the EX are much less pronounced than the DLSRs. And of course there's also the fact that the DSLRs shoot a lower resolution than the EX and exhibit the much talked about moire/aliasing issues.

I'll agree with you that you can shoot similar image quality. DSLRs obviously give you a lot more options lens wise, though the lens on the EX is damn impressive.

And don't underestimate what clients will and won't spend money on. As wrong as it might sound, I know far too many people who like the sight of a big body camera tricked out with all the accesories. They don't understand the technical side of things. So when they see that big camera, they think "Hollywood." They might be looking to cut costs in various ways, but they usually always still want the biggest and best gear out there on their projects.

For what it's worth I've owned an EX1 and just recently bought a 7D. And while I love the 7D from my limited use, I just know there are going to be times when I wish I still had my EX1.

Agreed, handsome_pete...I think Cieloent is so blinded by his love and devotion to a certain camera that he's not comprehending that a client may not want an HDSLR for some reason. It may even be a stupid reason. But if the client wants it shot on an EX1, an HVX, or, hell, even a VX1000, and you either refuse or are simply unable to, then you lose the gig, pure and simple.

No problems , all apologies accepted. Also I do understand that clients love the "Hollywood" look of bigger cameras. I do know though having a DSLR with a nice rig, follow focus, lens, etc. can give that same "look"

Finally part of getting gigs IMO is being a seller. If you can sell a job to someone and make them believe that you can achieve great footage with these HDSLRs than I think it's all relevant to what my argument has been.

Last but not least can someone find ANY footage shot with an EX camera that cannot be done on a HDSLR, please show video proof.

Thank you everyone!

Cieloent, we're not arguing that HDSLRs cannot put out a great image. Obviously they can. But if it comes down to a client preferring the look of an EX1 over an HDSLR, you shoot with an EX1 or lose the gig.

Your request is very broad. And if I had any of my XDcam footage nearby I would gladly post you a sample, but I'm not going to go scour the internet to prove a point when I can do it without it.

Just answer me these questions:

Does the 7D have over/under cranking abilities?
Can it output an uncompressed 4:2:2 image?
Does it have a motorized zoom?
Can it record 13min continuously?

I can go on, but to answer for you, it's no to all of them. That's a fact.

Both DSLRs and the EX are good for what they do, but as far as a standalone video camera, the EX wins more often than not.
