So celebrity Canon DSLR users include Ron Howard, George Lucas, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Hughes Brothers, Rodney Charters, Sam Nicholson , Jeff Jur (Flashforward ABC) Shane Hurlburt (Terminator 4) . And this is just the 1st generation of this technology. Guess VDSLRs are not just a fad after all. In 5-10 Years will Hollywood Blockbusters be shot on Canon VDSLR's? I wonder if Steven Soderbergh & Peter Jackson will be next to convert to VDSLR? Please list any other Hollywood filmmakers who are using DSLRs for projects.

Heres a link to Ron Howard's comedy short starring Jim Carey, Will Ferrell, , Dan Akyroyd, Chevy Chase, Dana Carvey, and stars from Saturday Night Live

I doubt very much that movies will ever be shot on VDSLRs (except the odd scenes). No, I reckon that there will be large sensor camcorders before long. After all, footage from small sensor camcorders looks so... boring compared to DSLR footage, so they're going to have to catch up sooner or later. It's no good having a consumer shoot something that visually looks better than pro stuff with very little effort.

I love my 7D and all, but there's no way entire films will be shot with HDSLRs. Bits and pieces, yes- that's already happening. But take a look at the Epic FF35 that RED is working on. Now that's something entire movies will be filmed with.

What is Tarantino using DSLRs for? This surprises me, since he's said dislikes shooting on digital and will actually quit making films when digital projection starts to take over from using film reels at cinemas..

Actually indie feature films have already been shot on 7D's - the question is will Hollywood films be shot on DSLR in the near future? The RED has great picture quality, but when it first came out it was only used as backup B- camera or a VFX Camera. After a few years of testing, they made Hollywood films with the camera. New cameras always goes through a testing phase before its used as a primary camera.

Hollywood movies, what are we expecting from?

Indie features? Yes. Why not? They're coming.

Once it does seem I am a HD-DSLR enthusiast :-) I've received a few emails from dvxuser.com members asking my opinion -- even today, trying to wonder more on the subject. Once 'my two cents' is the abbreviation of "two cents' worth", here is my 2 cents ;-)

I don't think he's been said to be using them. Only reference I know of that's been made to Tarantino was that he sat in with Lucas when Philip Bloom's footage was shown at Skywalker Ranch, and is said to have been impressed.

It's a stop-gap measure. I'd fully expect within a few more years to see a Canon DSLR like camera with none of the limitations- i.e. RAW shooting modes, proper monitor outs, pro sound inputs etc. It's just a matter of connecting the dots. Market is right there for them...

Noah

What Noah said.

So, the answer to the OP's questioon I would say is yes. Not in their current iterations...but in the form of what Noah mentioned. For "Hollywood" that is... but as you alreay mentioned Indies are and have been shooting features with these cameras (as difficult as it might be).

lol internets,so if spielberg would saw 7d video then hes 7d user and will start to make films on it according to some internet too much thinking guys.WOW just... wow.
Tarantino ,Lucas ? Where are their vids ?Inspired by Bloom maybe ?
Bizarre.
Maybe i might sound offensive but this thread is so over the top its not even funny anymore.

how do you know that? Many of us who have shot on film see the current generation of DSLR as utilizing the same workflow- minus the lab and telecine. Only 12 minuntes? A 400' film mag gets you roughly the same. Get an XLR pre-amp or shoot dual system for better audio, and dust off the clapper. Plus you have imeediate review and don't have to wait for dailies.

To say you can't shoot an entire film with an HDSLR is pretty short sited- since its not a video camera you just have to adjust your workflow.

Hey I LOVE my 7d just as much as the next but I HIGHLY doubt that any film produced by one of the major production compaines will be shot on a DSLR. If they're putting a few million into a movie, they're certainly going to want it shot on something more suitable than a $1,699 body DSLR.

Although, a small indie production can certainly justify going the DSLR route, especially one of my productions lol.

I think Movie equipment Will Evolve Beyond the Traditional (what We have and What vdslrs mimic) and we will start Making Movies with Stuff We dont even Know Exist today.

That's a safe bet; I think those of us with DSLRs are living proof, because if you told someone five years ago that we'd be using these things they'd have stared at you like you were crazy.

Heck NASA has Technology that can tell what kind of Rocks are made up of From an Orbiting Satelite and Imaging and Sound Equipment that is beyond any 5k or 6k resolution, its only time till it trikles down.. Peole who shoot Movies with technology that is Antiquated just because they feel safe using it, will get left behind very quickly,, Why fly Propellars when you have Jets!! just an Analogy.

From what I have heard, George Lucas and Quentin Tarantino are not DSLR users, they merely watched some footage. It might be helpful if you have information to the contrary to include a link or two.

Bottom line, for guys like these a RED camera is an impulse buy. A 7D to them is so inexpensive it might as well be free. Given the current limitations they would only use the DSLRs in situations where they needed it for a very specific purpose, like in a lower budget shoot where there's not a lot of room for even a RED(the plane cockpits in Lucas's Red Tails).

The 7D/t2i are terrific cameras at a price that evens out the playing field a bit, but let's not go overboard. You can get great footage out of them but realistically given a sizeable budget(ie over $500,000) NO ONE would shoot an entire feature with one unless there were some compelling advantage(ie space, weight) to do so.

He must be seeing something I'm not at the cinema. I can tell within moments if I'm watching 35mm film projected or digital just from the abominable flicker from film.

Once I saw 1 movie projected digitally, I never went back to 35mm projected. And that is 2K. 4K is coming...

Anyways, yeah. I don't think anything more than indie features will be made with DSLRs. I doubt we'd even see them in RedBox or wherever indie stuff gets distributed.

To me, the 7D and similar cameras are great starter kits. I'm a recent college grad, and I own one...I hope I'm not still using a similar tool in a few years, particularly with all the new stuff coming out from RED and others to follow...
