so yeah, just a quick pro/con...
What should i get? i really like the changeable lens on the canon 7D but that is pretty much it besides the jello effect.

Help me on this one please -.-' aha im stumped...

I shoot pretty much anything....

What will you be using it for?

I haven't sold my HMC150 to buy a DSLR, and I don't see myself doing it anytime in the near future for what I use it for.

Ditto MadHMC150.

I was using my DSLR to film a pretty emotional interview. We were at the emotional peak of the story. Next thing I know, I look down and it says that camera is overheating! Never happened with my HMC150. When you've got the have the shot, you can't fully depend on an DSLR.

Did you get the shot?

The temp is the one thing that I'm worried about when it comes to shooting with the 7D. I Really wish I could have kept my HVX.

Sound is just as important as the picture so when comparing prices you need to factor in the cost of a separate sound recorder.

The lens on the HMC150 has a field equivalent to 28mm to 368mm on a full frame 35mm camera but on the 7D that equates 17.5mm to 230mm. You would do a lot of lens swapping on the 7D as no lens I know is available with that range. You may well need several expensive lenses. Also lenses get very expensive if you want to use large apertures to reduce the depth of field so the cost equation may not be as far in favour of the 7D as you might think.

If you primarily want a camera for short clips and your main interest is in stills then the 7D would be a good choice. I think it is also useful as a second camera when you want shots with shallow depth of field but for mainstream video there is just no contest the HMC150 wins hands down in my opinion.

why a 7D and not a T2i? it's half the price! and virtually the same for video! =) well at least on paper...

I'll look seriously at a T2i as a still camera and for video under certain circumstances. At that price, it would be a good addition to my HMC.

Better yet, I'll buy it for my wife, that way I can get it ASAP...........

I own a 7D and an HMC150. If you want to shoot video, get the 150. The 7D can shoot video, but it's a pain.

I also have the HMC150. luv it.

but I want to invest in a DSLR after i sold my D90. I want the 7D for short films and music videos

why do you guys say its a PAIN? i enjoyed the D90

One of each. Roll both cameras on interviews... capture good audio with the HMC, use the 7D/T2i as B camera. It's easy to run both with just one shooter, just leave the HMC rolling and man the 7D. A Cinesaddle on a 4' ladder works good for the 7D :D

Another thing to consider is ergonomics...the HMC-150 is meant to shoot video, so holding it is easier. Stabilizing your shot is easier. Not to mention, being able to flip the LCD screen of the HMC is convenient when shooting at different angles and heights.

Nothing against the 7D, but it's not as cheap as it's single price point suggests. For one, you're going to have to invest in a decent way to record audio. Second, interchangeable lenses means that you will in fact have to buy lenses (I mean whats the point of being able to use primes if you just use the kit lens) And, as we know, good lenses aren't. exactly cheap.

Fair point. But are there any cameras out there that are as cheap as their price points suggest? The HMC has better audio but you should still probably buy a decent on-camera shotgun mic at a minimum. And if you want to use prime lenses then you need an adapter, as an example.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you must.

for me the skew is the only problem and for run and gun shooting ...... interchangeable lenses is a bigger problem.
Imagine being in the dessert or on the river and you need to change lenses ..that's a big no no.
Love the Hmc 150 and I love the 7d with kitlens 28-135mm sometimes even more.
