HMC150 and FCP

So I just ordered an HMC150 yesterday from B&H and I can't wait for it to come in! I haven't posted much on this site but have read ALOT and watched ALOT of footage. All the advice on this forum is excellent!

I also had to upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2 so I can edit the AVCHD. I currently have a MacBook Pro 17" 2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo and 2GB Ram. Is this going to be sufficient to edit with Final Cut Pro? Is anyone working with a similar setup that can shed some light on how this workflow will operate, I would greatly appreciate it!

Also, read on the apple support site that the next update of FCP should offer native AVCHD? Has anyone else heard this as well?

Thanks for all the help!

That MacBook Pro should be sufficient.

It you haven't heard it from Apple, it isn't a certain thing.

To be honest, my experience is that AVCHD native editing in RT isn't ready for prime time.

AVCHD is too computational intensive to facilitate native and real time. The sooner you leave long GOP, the better.

Unlike mpeg2, mpeg4 is a different animal.

I have a Macbook Pro a little beefer than yours (2.5 / 4gb ram) and it handles Pro Res / AIC wonderfully. In fact I can do some native AVCHD work with premier. Although i can't get very complicated.

Thanks for the advice. I don't really mind having to transcode to Pro Res. I have heard good things about the codec and that it operates really smoothly. I just don't like the large files. Also, is the transcoding time consuming, similar to capturing with tape?

Ingesting or transcoding is a digital conversion.

How fast it occurs is dependent on the speed of your computer.

But it also provides the opportunity to add metadata, set i/o, rename, etc.

So you are actually logging your footage as you ingest.

While clip is ingesting you are addressing the next one. You can also do the logging and walk away while ingest occurs.

I use the first generation MacBook Pro 15" and it transcodes the AVCHD pretty well, so your new 17" should be just fine- about 1 minute transcode time to 1 minute of real video, or slightly shorter.
