Hf-g30 & xa10 resolution test

No details are listed on the settings he used. I'm guessing he didn't shoot in 24p or PF25 and instead had the cameras in 50i, since it looks more like interlacing artifacts on both the XA10 and 24mbps G30 shots rather than a resolution difference. The 28mbps would have had to been 50p as I think that is the only recording mode that data rate can be assigned to.

HE [me] said in every clip which mbps was set,28mbps is 50P and 24mbps which in the case of the XA10 is 25P in an interlaced wrapper,it may look like interlacing on youtube but the extra resolution on small horizontal lines can still be seen but not to the extent of playing the footage via blu ray etc on hd tv

Sorry, I only caught the data rate when I watched the video. Thanks for throwing that test together. Any chance you could make a small mts file from each camera available for download?

No worries, but although i use vimeo that can be downloaded its only the free vimeo so it would only be in 720P which would not show the full resolution,i now wish i had put a dark cover under the resolution chart it would have stopped the shimmering and made it easier to watch,Youtube can be downloaded but its not the done thing, regarding differences in resolution between te new HF-G30 and XA10 its hard to spot any difference except on resolution charts.

You could use a cloud storage system like Dropbox to share a couple MTS files direct from the cameras instead of using a video sharing site with recompressed and edited video. I'm quite interested in the new g30 as a replacement for my G10.

Do you meen raw stored files, mine are on external drives,As for the G30 its lens alone makes it worth the change,as i said resolution is fractionaly better horizontaly but in normal outdoor filming it would hard to see any difference,i have not done any proper low light test but my view is there is little difference ,the AWB seems to work better & overall colour is a tad less vivid with both on 0 setting, these are comparisons with my XA10 which should be the same as your HF-G10.

Having done more tests i am confused why the HF-G30 has no more resolution than the XA10 or why 50P 28 Mbps and 25P 24Mbps have the same on the HF-G30,Youtube is of litle help but playing file uploads or from cards direct direct to tv or on HD disc on tv shows there is no difference. The youtube video should be ignored playing raw files or uploads direct to tv show the G30 has the same resolution in 50P 28Mbps as 25p 24P 24Mbps and no more than the XA10

I've been meaning to come back to this, but have been super busy this past week. Very odd that the resolution would be different with different recording modes. If anything, I would think the 25p would be better because of more date per frame. Are you sure your NLE is treating the 25p video as progressive and not using line doubling since it is wrapped in 50i? Later next week I'll probably get around to looking at my g10 with a similar test to the one you did.

Hi a bit confused by your reply, you say very odd that resolution would be different with different recording modes then say 25P which is in a wrapper would be better because of data rate per frame,i am now realy confused as to the use of 50P that uses a lot more space on cards over 25P which my software is probobly treating as interlaced if i get no more resolution which i dont as playing the recorded files direct show,if 50Ps slow motion which is its only dubious benefit makes my previous doubts over the 50P hype as proved to me.50P is harder to edit my softwares would not handle it so i searched for one that would on my pc setup.

You are spreading 28mbps across 50 1920x1080 frames vs spreading 24mbps across 25 1920x1080 frames. I would think the 50p would therefore introduce more visible compression artifacts. The PF25 mode records the 25 progressive frames in the form of 50 interlaced frames. When attempting to turn those 50 interlaced frames into 25 progressive frames in your NLE, your NLE may just be throwing out one set of fields and doubling the other to achieve a 1080p resolution because it may be assuming that the original recording was not progressive. If this is the case, you would need to manually tell it that the footage you have is progressive.

NLE does not come into it,sharpness resolution of 24mbps & 28 mbps is the same when files play back directly to tv,i would like to try Mpeg4 but when i try to load files nothing shows unlike avchd/stream etc with avchd files.Connecting via usb from the camcorder will load the files but again i see no extra performance with Mpeg4.
