Help with P2 Footage.

Hey all.

I shot some footage with my HVX and I saved a project with all the footage by using the "Log and Transfer" into fcp like I always do. But I also as a precausion dragged everything off of the P2 card and saved it all on a back folder in my hard drive. My problem is that When I loaded my FCP project I'm noticed that one clip isn't there. So I tried to import the clips from the back up folder and lit is not letting me. Am I doing something wrong? I right click in the clip window and select "import" >> "files" >> and I select the entire folder of the HVX footage but it says "File Error: 66 File(s) recognized, 0 access Denied, 14 unknown" then when I hit ok it says that the clips arent optimized for Final Cut Pro. What do I need to do to import them into FCP? Please Help. Or are these clips unusable?

PS I do Have P2CMS but have no clue how to use it.

to create a backup for a P2 card you need to have dragged all the contents of the card, including the lastclip.txt file, into their own special folder. Then you can select that folder with "select new path" and it will come up like the card does.

If you didn't grab the .txt file I would suggest googling creating a new one, as it is entirely doable.

I did indeed copy the .txt file. but I highlighted both the "contents" folder and the "lastclip.txt" and copied dragged them both to the same folder in my hardrive. But now how do I view/import the footage thats saved on my hardrive into fcp? Thanks

So I tried to import the clips from the back up folder
your backup folder is effectively the same thing as a P2 card. you CANT "import" from it. you'll need to repeat your usual log and transfer process again. but direct it to your backup folder.

so, did this missing clip show up in your original project? if so, is it now simply not there or is it showing up as a red "missing" file?

if it WAS there originally, go to your scratch folder, which (im guessing by the nature of your post) will be in your documents folder on your computer in a folder called "final cut pro documents" then in a sub-folder called "capture scratch"

I actually found the clip. It was right in front of my nose. But its good for me to know how to access the footage in my back up folders. How would I log and transfer again using the folders?

File>Log & Transfer> than direct it to your P2 folder on the hard drive. When it opens select the contents folder- and you are good to go.

im not understanding. do you ALWAYS log and transfer directly from the connected card? BAD IDEA! or better said DANGEROUS IDEA!
but thats for another conversation.

in the log and transfer window, there is an icon in the upper left. a folder with plus sign. click that, then navigate to your "backup folder"

Actually yes. What Ive always done is attached the card to the reader and the p2 Icon appears on the desktop. Then I open fcp and go to log and transfer and all the clips load up from the card. Is that the wrong way of doing it? Its the way ive always know from reading somewhere and I always right protect the carsds. why is it wrong/dangerous? So that I know. Thanks for the help

Johnny,

Never, ever do that. You are putting your project at risk. Always transfer your card contents and last clip reference to a designated folder on an external hard drive (or two drives as a form of redundancy). Than, log and transfer into your Final Cut project from your external hard drive.

I see. Thank you for letting me know. I had no idea. Thanks for all the info everyone.

well, it all depends on how you go about it. if you log and transfer the ENTIRE card. then youre a little safer.
one problem is that a lot of people only L&T the clips the need right then. then if they come back later and want something different. and if the cards been formatted. its gone.

and L&Ting the ENTIRE card is also kind of a lazy thing to do. as in over 15 years ive never used every single shot on a tape/ card. if you just L&T the whole thing, youre eating up drive space with a bunch of extra files you probably will never need.

a raw full P2 card takes up WAY less space than everything on that card being L&Td

by simply transferring the full card to your drive first. you always have the "source footage" on hand should you want or need to do something with it. or if your L&Td quicktime clips go bad. or other such unpleasantry.

L&Ting direct from a card isnt by definition "wrong" its just a careless way to go about things.
